PROMO closed: convert 20,000 SPG points to 62,500 Delta Skymiles til yearend

Apologize for cross posting, but I thought this one merits some attention here.

Delta is running a promo whereby miles earned through end of year are awarded a bonus. For example, if you earn 10,000 or more miles during the promotion period, you are awarded a 150% bonus on top of this.

By my calculation, one could transfer 20,000 SPG points, which covert at 25,000 Delta Skymiles. The bonus awarded will be 150% (37,500 miles), yielding a total of 62,500 Delta Skymiles for the 20,000 SPG points.

Based on their very good value for hotel stays (especially &CP), I am very hesitant to move my SPG points, especially into an inflationary program where I am miles-rich... but this one will be too good to pass up.

Note that, in order to maximize bang for buck here, you can transfer a max of 20k SPG points per day to Delta.

Also, someone on the thread I started at DL mentioned another 30% SPG-->DL bonus. If I find the details to that, I will post them here.

Thanks for pointing this out. I registered after reading you other post, thinking that I would get the bonus miles primarily from using my DL Amex, but I didn't read down to the bottom of the T&Cs about the promo applying to mileage transfers.

I think that one ended recently - I was only able to find El Al and VS yesterday on the MR website.

Wow - this is quite a deal. I'll have to think about it.

holtju2 Nov 19, 2008 7:55 am

This is just insane. Delta is "printing" miles like crazy.

shloveg2 Nov 19, 2008 8:30 am

If this really works, great!!!

bpoe19 Nov 19, 2008 8:36 am

If this works, I can top off my account to get my needed miles for two Business RTW tickets.

Am I correct in assuming that I could transfer 120k as part of a Marriott Travel Package at get a 150% bonus on that? That is 300k miles!!

RAPC Nov 19, 2008 8:55 am

Now this really looks crazily generous. Generous to the point where I'd consider moving some of my travel to Delta as a result.

Is the miles transfer a one time only things, or is the bonus payable on multiple transfers? i.e. If I moved some orphaned Marriott points over as well as say, 20,000 SPG points, would bonus miles by paid out on both at 150%?

If so, this really is a giveaway and a half...

Thanks, OP! I think that this thread is worth keeping in this forum. We can do some SPG-specific info here. So let's do some math!...

If one values Starpoints at 2.0 cents per point, then
20K Starpoints * 2.0 = $400 = 62,500 miles = 0.64 cents per mile.

If one values Starpoints at 2.5 cents per point, then
20K Starpoints * 2.5 = $500 = 62,500 miles = 0.08 cents per mile.

At Starwood's selling price of 3.5 cents per point, then
20K Starpoints * 3.5 = $700 = 62,500 miles = 1.12 cents per mile.

If a couple residing together has 0 Starpoints but needs a total of 125K SkyMiles in one account, each of them can purchase 20K Starpoints for $700 and then have them transferred together into one SPG account for transfer to a particular SkyMiles account. (IIRC, there might be a restriction that dictates that that SPG account must be open for at least a month before a transfer can take place, but I might have this confused with something else.)

Since transfers to airlines aren't instantaneous, I would suggest that people not wait until the last minute to take advantage of this offer.

I have lots of SkyMiles, but I might take advantage of this offer.

I just registered for the promo and put through the transfer request. I'll post back with results.

Cumulative. The bonus is based on the total SkyMiles earned from eligible partner activity during the offer's time period of Nov 13 - Dec 31.

(It would be almost "pointless" to offer it any other way for partners such as for car rental, shopping, and dining which typically are smaller transactions.)

Want to check my math for Nights & Flights? If you have a 5th-night-free SPG Award stay coming up at a Cat4 hotel (40K points), then it may be worth changing it to a N&F II award to spend 30K more Starpoints to yield 50K Delta miles + the 150% bonus miles = 125K Skymiles.

30K Starpoints @ 2.5 cents/point = $750 = 125K miles = 0.6 cents per mile

(There's also the similar Nights & Flights (I) offer for a 5-night stay at a Cat3 hotel. N&F costs 32K Starpoints more than a 5th-night-free award.)

I registered as well and xfered 20K SPG points (25K miles) to my Skymiles. I'll post back with results.

BrooklynCPA Nov 19, 2008 9:29 am

Am I understanding correctly what I am reading here. You get this 150% bonus on miles transferred from Starwood to Delta? Are you sure it not only on actuall miles flown on Delta or one of it's partners? Where do Ifind this promotion.

Thanks
