15% bonus on SPG Amex

Just got this email. As per T&C, apparently a targeted offer.

Get closer to your dream vacation with virtually every purchase. Pay with your Card to earn 15% more Starpoints that you can redeem for free nights at Starwood hotels and resorts or airline miles on over 30 major airlines.(1) And with no blackout dates or restrictions, you can go whenever you want — now sooner rather than later.(2)

Enroll now at americanexpress.com/starpoints9 and enter RSVP Code XXXXXXXXX

P.S. Earn an upgrade to Gold Preferred Guest® status when you spend $30,000 in a calendar year, and gain access to larger Starpoints bonuses, automatic room upgrades, and more.(3)

Terms & Conditions
This offer is non-transferable and is valid for solicited Cardmembers only. Enrollment is required. In addition to earning two Starpoints for each U.S. dollar of Eligible Spending charged on your Card account at Starwood-branded hotels and resorts then participating in the Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty program, and at stand-alone retail establishments and online stores that, in each case, are wholly owned by Starwood® Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., and one Starpoint for all other Eligible Spending, a 15% bonus will be posted to your Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card account for a maximum bonus of 7,500 Starpoints. "Eligible Spending" includes purchases of goods or services, which purchases have not been returned or otherwise rescinded, and are not subject to a credit; it does NOT include fees, Finance Charges, Cash Advances (including the use of checks, line activators, automated teller machines, or other means of accessing your account), Balance Transfers, or adjustments to your account. We reserve the right not to award any Starpoints® for transactions we determine are not made with the good faith intention of consuming the item charged. To receive bonus Starpoints, your Card account must be open and in good standing. Bonus Starpoints earned via this promotion will be posted to your Starwood Preferred Guest account 6-8 weeks after September 15, 2007. For a list of participating airlines, transfer ratios, and full program details, go to www.spg.com.

I just got this same email, but mine was for an add'l 25% more miles. Sweet! I had some big purchases I was planning on making anyway.

rich120 Aug 16, 2007 10:52 am

Bollucks! I never get targeted!

u2vox Aug 16, 2007 11:20 am

Those of you with AMEX account online access (user name and password, so you don't nees an RSVP code to see if you can register for this promo) might want to "check" if you are targeted specifically in the following order:

https://www109.americanexpress.com/d...pe=starpoints8

https://www109.americanexpress.com/d...pe=starpoints7

https://www109.americanexpress.com/d...pe=starpoints9

40 > 25 > 15. :D:D

gfowler-ord-1k Aug 16, 2007 11:50 am

I got the 25% offer. My Amex spending is typically $1k-3K per month, mostly at Starwood hotels, but also some plane tickets and Costco.

CCFlyer17 Aug 16, 2007 12:11 pm

Thanks - apparently I was eligible for the 25% offer!

choptliva Aug 16, 2007 12:18 pm

timhall33 Aug 16, 2007 1:18 pm

Does it...

...need to be a Starwood AMEX or can you use a Platinum regular AMEX at a Starwood location?

MileageAddict Aug 16, 2007 1:19 pm

Three strikes for me too... bleh. :td:

jetlagjunkie Aug 16, 2007 1:30 pm

W2B Globetrotter Aug 16, 2007 1:46 pm

adamak Aug 16, 2007 2:13 pm

Folks that have been around awhile will recall the best practice is to write a letter to Amex corporate and complain about not having been targetted. Most folks get a dump of miles by way of apology (along w/ the explanation that marketing does these algorithm thingies and there's nothing that can be done to add you to the promo).

Reported # of points given range from 10k - 100k, I believe.

Folks have also reported some points for sending the complaint through the Amex email system when you're logged into your account, you won't get the reply by email but you'll probably get a letter in a couple of weeks... that process yields far fewer points (expect less than 10k).

Here's an old thread with much discussion on the subject

And the most recent contact info referenced therein:

I work down the block from this address and haven't been targetted in YEARS! What are the odds I can show up and have a little sit down??? Hmmm? Hmmm?

anyone worried about phishing sites?

I am a bit hesitant to put in my AMEX login and password on those 3 above sites. What if they are phishing sites? Isn't anyone worried about that?

JeffISU Aug 17, 2007 5:04 am

No, they're all from the American Express site. The part of the web address you need to be worried about is the part immediately before the .com. So in this example www109.americanexpress.com is a legitimate site from AMEX. Now if the site were americanexpress.www109.com, then I'd be worried.

If you look at the bottom of the page where you actually put in the account login info, it says copyright 2006. If it was legit, shouldn't it say 2007?

I'm going to play it safe and send in a letter via mail.

GrizShel Aug 17, 2007 5:36 am

0 for 3. :(

NJTravelers Aug 17, 2007 6:04 am

Nada, Zip, Zilch

Oh well....tried all three threads and nothing....will send a letter this morning and see what that brings!
:p

Always good to be cautious about phishing, but I'm not concerned in this case. I didn't have to provide any account info when I enrolled by clicking the link in the email offer to me. I just had to enter the enrollment code contained in that email. The follow-up email that confirmed my enrollment gave the last five numbers of my Amex account.

FWIW, all of the copyright small print in my emails and enrollment page said 2007.

SPG 40% More Points

What is the RSVP code for the SPG Card offer of 40% more points?

Rail Baron Aug 17, 2007 7:34 am

Got the 15%!

This is the first AMEX promotion I have ever been able to get though I only got the 15%. I have had the Starwood AMEX since 2003 and probably average $1K/mo on it through other spending. Well, better than nothing. I assume that it is not retroactive to August 15th. I spent about $700 on it two days ago on Aug. 15th.

The RSVP code will only work for the person who received the targetted offer. Each RSVP code is linked to user account.

ExitRowAisle Aug 17, 2007 11:01 am

E-Mail Roll Out?

I know it is only mid-day, but has anyone received new e-mails today (Fri, Aug 17) to enroll in this promotion?

Also, have people been successful in the past in getting promo points from Starwood AMEX if they were not specifically offered the promotion via e-mail or mail? I know some programs will let you "successfully register" for a promo and then never give you the points if you were not targetted. Is that the case with Starwood AMEX?

kimag Aug 17, 2007 2:15 pm

Nothing for me. Thanks for the link anyways.

cstead Aug 17, 2007 2:27 pm

Another whiff for me. I haven't been targeted for a single promo by Amex, even though I use all of my Amex cards consistently and exclusively (unless the vendor doesn't take it, of course). Guess I'm writing a letter

GBGFlyer Aug 17, 2007 7:37 pm

Funny, I have 3 SPG AMEX accounts - an old one from 5 years ago, a business one, and they made me get a new one 2 months ago to use express pay (old accounts are in a database that can't use it other than with the key chain thing). Only the old account qualified for the 40%, the others qualified for nothing.

But I did get another 10k for the new account
