This is always interesting to me as well. First let me say a "decent number" is having enough to do whatever you want with them. For me that is about 128,000 points as I like to travel for 5 nights (5th night free) and typically stay at the 16K/night properties, getting two connecting rooms if I can't get a suite upgrade (which, thankfully, I usually do).
Currently I have 146,252.

675,000? HOLY COW! You must LIVE in SPG hotels? How do you accumulate most of your points?

A 'decent' number of Starpoints is a highly relative number......which differs among SPG members.
Personally, I think having at least 50K available at any point in time provides some flexibility.
Then again......others may feel that 100K or more is a good number to have.
It all depends on your own 'needs' for the points.
Right now, I am slightly over 130,000.....despite redeeming 28K for a 5th night free award at a then CAT 3 (now Cat 4) hotel earlier this year.
I like having this many right now.....as I might redeen a bunch of them for a 5th night free award at a Cat 5 later this year.
FWIW, all of my points come via stays as I do NOT have a Starwood CC.

About 459K, though I will be burning about 350K on a trip to Europe this fall. European SPG hotels are way too costly, IMOH.
I like to keep 100K + in my account as a buffer for flexibility, and spur of the moment trips.

I just had 89,912 post today from my credit card. All of my points are from large hotel contracts and using the credit card for about 100K each month, sometimes 500k a month.

mine is bigger than yours
This is a promising thread! A new aristocracy is emerging!
What I have learnt so far :
- There is such thing as a "decent amount of points" and getting it makes one, I guess, decent.
- There is no limit to the accumulation of points. One can be tempted to save enough to spend his/her retirement years in an overwater bungalow at the W Maldives.
- Getting points via stays is more legit than getting them by buying toilet paper with a credit card.
Please keep on sending, we need more information!

Not if you have a beach house in the Virgin Islands! The ability to hop on a plane on a moments notice and not even have to worry about paying for a flight is priceless.
Come and go as you like. No shoes, no shirt, no problem.

84,578 as of today before my latest stay posts.
All hard earned nights and no CC spend...Have redeemed almost 40K since last year on cheap stays for friends in need or silly trips.
My goal for next year is to have enough to stay at the Bora Bora property for 7 days.
It's a long journey when I have to mix in Sheraton stays every now and then for biz instead of the typical Westin/W.
FWIW, I'm 24.
