It is only two blocks further from the French Quarter than The Westin and located across South Peter Street from Harrah's.
W is still further out and Poydras Street and Canal Street are two totally different streets even if separated by a few blocks. You likely won't come across drunks or homeless folks on poydras street, but venture out on Canal Street at night and you probably will. Poydras St. is heart of CBD / whereas Canal Street is outlier of the French Quarter and a tourist spot in its own right.

Four Points

If you want to be on Bourbon Street near the action and want balcony the Four Points is surprisingly good. I had never stayed at a Four Points and ended up staying an "extra" night in NOLA so moved here from another non SPG property

It was GREAT! Clean, big rooms. Marble bathroom, good check-in, attentive housekeeping, good balcony (not AS BIG as some of the others).

If you want to be close to action but not be in the middle of what can sometimes be chaos at 2-3 am then the W is better. I havent stayed there but went by and it seemed nice.

Not aware of anything special. Unavailability is just all the Starwood properties. Plenty of availability showing at Hilton and Marriott properties for those dates.

I wonder if the NO 4P refurbed recently. Because when I stayed there for JazzFest 2013, the rooms were small, dark and old. The window was as small as a window in a prison. Housekeeping was terrible as well and the hotel was dirty. I did not have a balcony room either. I swore to never stay here again. But your glowing review makes me think something has changed since. No way this can be the same hotel.

IIRC, the last renovation for the 4P French Qtr was in 2010 which may have been before the property became a 4P.

question re w fq and their annoying music

I am having a major birthday in April and am heading to new orleans. Thinking about the W FQ on chartres. I've stayed there 2 or 3 times in the past, but last time, my room opened onto the courtyard, and the hotel was playing some godawful techno music. Trying way too hard to be cool. You could hear the bass even with all the doors and windows shut. Extremely annoying. I couldn't play music in the room without hearing theirs. (If they're going to force their music on you, at the very least it ought to be halfway new orleans-y.) Anyone know if they're still doing this? Thanks!

PS. Once I lucked out and snagged a patio overlooking chartres and just loved it. Is there a way to use points to grab one of those rooms?

I stayed at the W FQ in November and again last month and don't recall any loud music. Even sat outside in the courtyard in November and don't remember hearing any music. I'll be there again at the end of this month and will post an update if applicable.

Stayed at Westin NO during the ice storm late January 2014. Upgraded to a top floor suite with no begging. Great view of the Mississippi and good staff. Next to casino was a plus for me as well as shopping. You never leave the Westin as stores are beneath property. Visited Sheraton (large), 4 Points (in the heart of it all) and W (uber trendy) for comparison. Westins tend to suit me.

I had thought that W French Quarter would be the one to book b/c the description made it sound best, but after reading this thread I wonder if there are many other people who can share info on the best Starwood in NO.

I don't think any have clubs, so I guess the other thing would be location. I'd want a place that was near enough to the touristy places she'd want to see. As for me, I'd want to be within walking distance of the casino, if possible.

Do any of these have a shuttle from airport? What is average cab fare?

I really want to make it a great trip for my friend, so I'd love to choose the best hotel. Any advice is truly appreciated!
In a situation like this I would not rely on an upgrade, I would book the room type I want, even if that means using points to confirm a upgraded room or suite in advance. I've stayed at all the NoLa properties and IIRC, the Sheraton may be the only one with a suite that has two queen beds.

The Sheraton is the only property with a Club. All The properties are in the CBD/French Quarter all within short walking distance to one another and the FQ/Warehouse District and CBD restaurants and attractions. The W New Orleans is directly across the street from the Casino.

I don't recall any shuttle to/from airport and if you check the NOLA convention and visitor site, it can give you taxi information.

That is really great news. Maybe all my complaining shortly after my stay did some good!

Exclamation Moderator Note

A post with a stay review of the Sheraton New Orleans has been moved to the Master Thread devoted to that property. You can find that here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/starw...er-thread.html

Posts discussing that where the post belongs have been deleted. As always, if you believe a thread or post is better suited for another home, please report it to the moderators and leave it to us to review and handle. Discussing it just makes our jobs harder when tidying things up.

For clarification, our practice in the Starwood forum is to have stay reviews and property-specific information in the property Master Threads. That is their purpose. Threads like this one are for discussion of the relative merits of multiple properties in a city, with the expectation that someone will dive deeper into the property Master Threads once they've narrowed in on those of interest to them and want to learn more specifics.

As always, if you have any questions about the structure of the forum, please contact a moderator via Private Message.

Thank you,

UPDATE
Just finishing a one-night stay at W New Orleans French Quarter. No loud or annoying music around courtyard area (or anywhere else) when we left the property around 5:00 pm last night nor when we returned around 1:15 am this morning.

I'll post a complete review in the property's specific Master Thread in a couple of days.

For what it's worth, we just spent a few nights at the Westin and the W Poydras. We had fine stays in each (Westin didn't upgrade us but we used a SNA for a suite at the W), but would still take the Westin over the W Poydras when we go back again. Westin's location and amenities are better. I'm also 100% fine with not being IN the French Quarter. Actually, kind of prefer it the same way I wouldn't encourage visitors to stay in Times Square when visiting Manhattan.

For what it's worth, I understand the W Poydras will be a Le Meridien soon anyway.
