I think it was clear that every SPG member will be getting a new 9-digit number. YMMV, however.

Is there an existing MR number that matches yours? I'd guess they are hedging the bet and just putting a specific change to all SPG numbers to prevent duplicates instead of dealing with corner cases. I can see if all MR numbers are less than 4xxxxxxxx then making all SPG conversion numbers greater than 5xxxxxxxx would be the plan.

So today, if you decided you would rather get RC promotions instead of Marriott promos, you could call MR and ask them to change your program affiliation to RC. They will do that and your account (same account #) would now be RC rather than Marriott. Then tomorrow you could get tired of all those RC promos and call MR to switch your account back to Marriott again. They are the same.

Okay, so I'm super confused. If I have a reservation for a Marriott property already with my "old" Marriott number, should I cancel and wait to rebook after I get my new number (will I get a new number when my SPG and Marriott accounts merge) or just leave it? I'm thinking I just leave it, but just want to make sure.

No. The Marriott and RC programs are already the same thing. The difference is only the marketing "front-end" of the program. The accounts, points, LT numbers, etc are all the same.

21. Can Marriott Gift Cards and Marriott eCards be used at SPG properties beginning August 1? If not, when will they be accepted?
No, but we are looking into what the possibilities might be for the future. <added by Starwood Lurker 18May18>

And what about the dates for the banks? Amex has sent out notices that the 1:3 SPG "Starpoints to points" recalibration is happening on August 1, and that the matching change in earning rates on SPG cards happens at the same time., Will Amex have to correct that?

Currently both American Express and Diners Club USA (administered by BMO/Harris Bank) support transfers of points to SPG. Are they being notified of the new number format, or will transfers all be broken for a while after August 18th because those banks won't know that you have to use your new number instead of your old one? (I presume that SPG will be able to tell whether the transfer was in Starpoints or the new points, and won't just use the date it receives the transfer to determine that?)

American Express Changes Are Happening Before and After the 18th
American Express previously notified cardholders that unbonused points earning changes from 1 Starwood point per dollar (3 points in the new system) to 2 points in the new system, a one-third reduction in earning power. That will still happen August 1. David Flueck cautioned that For statement date closes August 1-18, there will be a little delay until after August 18th for points to show up in accounts because of this transition.

On 8/18, your new SPG member number will be active immediately. No action is required for any previous or upcoming stays that have already been booked. Your new number will be applied automatically. Beginning on 8/18, you should only use your new number.

I think you may miss my previous question. This 18-Aug date, I suppose it will be US EST? I am having a booking on 18-Aug in Asia (Jakarta to be precised). Should I brace myself for a problem? At upon check in, it may be just cross midnight for US EST.

We would suggest you to print a copy of your reservation confirmation letter and contact customer service if you encounter any issue upon check-in.

I am not worry about the reservation itself but more on the membership. As it may be the case, when I check in, the spg number is still valid but when I check out it will be no longer valid.

Christina gives good advice to keep all the documentation for the stay. No one is going to be able to give you a concrete guarantee that everything will transfer smoothly to your new account after 18 August, so keeping all the documentation is essential.
