I am assuming the Sheraton is available at 7000 points per night on the exact same dates?

It is always helpful if you provide relevant information in your first post. You'll note many people were discussing rates, when your question was really about points.

Rates in SLC can vary wildly. Usually they are pretty reasonable but a convention can throw everything out of whack.

I'd be curious if there was an offer for legacy Marriott properties .... on a cancelled SPG reservation.

I'd disagree with the poster below that the Marriott City Center should be avoided. Both the Marriott flag properties downtown are perfectly acceptable and have solid locations. Of course, neither will be 6,000 points a night. Not sure what days you're looking for but the points to dollar value considering cash rates seems pretty low for some of these properties.

I based my "avoid" of the Marriott City Center on my stay there the end of November. The GM said yes, it was overdue for renovation. Stains on the room carpet, major gouges in the desk, tears on the armchair, the mini fridge was sitting on the floor between the bed and the wall, jutting out into the space between the bed and the end of the bed (on "my side" of the bed, so I had to get over to the other side to get out of bed, and I hit my feet on the fridge in the middle of the night), shabby lounge... It's the reason all my stays in SLC after that have been at the Hotel Monaco.

I'm happy to update that SPG has stepped up, and we're now booked into the Sheraton SLC at the same points rate . I honestly had given up on SPG, but they called me and the representative was a specialist in hotel delays and made it happen. She was extremely pleasant and patient.

I honestly wasn't going to stay at an SPG property as a replacement before the call, since I didn't want my trip to start with that sour memory. But this was a genuine pleasant surprise if just for the fact that I had given up, and was about to move on for this trip. Not give up on SPG, but just a separation to let things cool, if that makes sense, and keep the bigger perspective. But the call changed things.

So in summary, your own results may vary, and these situations are fluid. But there are some really great folks who work at SPG and do see the bigger picture on supporting guests.

Congrats, OP. Glad it worked out for you.

Funny how the mind and determination can change on a flip of a switch.

That is great to hear! Enjoy downtown, as there is plenty of good restaurants within walking distance from the Sheraton. I haven't stayed at the Sheraton in about a year, but did walk through the lobby and restaurant/bar a few weeks ago. The remodel turned out very nice!

good to hear the issue was resolved in a positive way for you. As COSpilot said, lots of good restaurants close by.
