I can’t quite understand why there is so much angst, wild interpretations and misinformation in this thread when the OP is clearly worded that it’s simply “a sampling of hotels across five top redemption destinations”.

Obviously this doesn't impact everyone but as I almost always use my points for vacations, the loss of 5th Night Free is probably the biggest negative impact.

Thanks for the guidance!
Both legacy programs had that, and I don't think we've seen any indication that it won't continue

I posted this in the latest announcement thread pinned to the top of this forum:

Will the 5th night be free when redeeming points at any category now?
  • Members will still receive a complimentary night when they redeem for five. And, this benefit will be offered across all 8 Categories. <added by Starwood Lurker 19Apr18>
Does that help?

All in all not bad for new redemption rates with a pretty good sampling of different properties across these destinations. Some rather large increases but also some decreases. I suspect that after 2019 and into 2020 we'll see a number of properties adjust their award category levels.

So far I'm happy and pleased with the new combined program. I was fearful that the program would be very crappy and look too much like Hilton. So far, so good...

Not angst or I would have paid much closer attention instead of just glancing at listings for hotels I've stayed in the how-ever-many locations on the list. Sorry.

I thought I read somewhere its only free for the 5th night if the 5th night is OFF-PEAK or STANDARD rate. If it is during PEAK rate, it wont be free

The only reference point I have is the answer I posted on April 19th. If you want to add an additional question to the wiki on this thread, feel free to do so.

In The Points Guy interview with David Fleuck, he said that the 5th night has to be of the same or less value as the first 4 nights. Thus, if the first four days are peak, the free night can be peak as well. If you have standard rates on the first 4 then the 5th can be standard or off-peak. You just can't book an off peak or standard award and time it so the 5th night is peak and expect it to be free.

To be honest this is a bit silly ....
Marriott could easily solve this by giving the free night as the cheapest room in those 5 nights

say
1 peak - 20000
2 peak - 20000
3 standard - 15000
4 off peak - 10000
5 peak - 20000
Total : 85000 points

Then deduct the point for night no.4 to the total redemption value
OR
Averaging the points / day during stays
Above example ... total points required : 85000 ... reduce 1/5 (17500) so required point to book is 67500 points

Much ado about nothing?

Just finally took a look at the web site for new free nights awards; reposted link below, seems for my favorite category properties that used to cost me 14K/night I'm actually ahead. Still get 4 nights and 5th night free. Used to be 14K and will go 35K for now then 30/40K during peak, given 1:3 exchange I'm ahead.

How are you doing with your favorite property?

I searched in the curend MR program for the night 27.th to 28.th May

Bangkok Marriott Surawongse cat 5 / 25k price 188 $ / 0,75 cent my asumption new cat 4 also 25k
Renaisance BKK Ratchaprasong cat 6 30k price 151 $ / 0,50 cent my asumption new cat 4 ( if over that absolutly overpriced ) 25 k
Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok cat 4 / 20k price 112 $ / 0,56 cent my asumption new cat 3 ( if stay in 4 it is also totaly overpriced ) 17,5k
JW Marriott cat 6 / 30k price 179 $ / 0,60 cent my asumtion new cat 5 ( this has the best location from all Marriott hotel in BKK 35 k
BKK Marriott Marquis Queen Park cat 5 / 25k / 151 $ / 0,60 cent my asumtion new cat 4 25k
Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit cat 5 / 25k / 148 $ / 0,59 cent my asumtion new cat 4 25k

now we come to the curent SPG hotel in bangkok

Royal Orchid Sheraton kat 3 / 7/21 k price 96 $ / 0,46 cent ( @ that day the paid rate was very low, my asumption them have to stay a cat 3 ) 17,5 k
Westin Grand Sukhumvit kat 4 10/30 k price 155 $ 0,52 cent ( my asumption it's now already overpriced has to stay in kat 4 then 25 k
Le Meridien Suriwong kat 4 10/30 k price 159 $ 0,52 cent ( my asumption it's now already overpriced has to stay in kat 4 then 25 k )
St Regis Bangkok kat 5 12/36 k price 228 $ 0,63 cent ( my asumption it' stays in kat 5 then 35 k )
W Bangkok kat 4 10/30 k price 180 $ 0,60 cent ( my asumption it' stays in kat 4 then 25 k )
Plaza Athenee kat 4 10/30 price 201 & 0,67 cent ( my asumption it's now already overpriced for cash and also points has to stay in kat 4 then 25 k )
Aloft Bangkok kat 2 4/ 9 or 12k price 86 $ 0,72 cent ( after many years we stayed in Westin/ P.A./and L.M. when them were kat 3 hotels, we moved to this hotel hope it stays cat 2
4Point Bangkok kat 3 7/21 k price 118 $ 0,56 cent ( that is the most overpriced hotel from SPG in Bangkok cash and also points ) should go down to kat 2
Sheraton Sukh. kat 4 10/30 k price 275 $ 0,92 cent ( that's the best value for points in BKK and for me the only one worth kat 4 from the ones them have )
