Not sure if I should post this as a failure or a success as it doesn't fit either thread
The upgrade is not because of Platinum benefit, but from the promotion the hotel have for Chinese New Year.
The initial check in staff insist that she can't offer me an upgrade as St. Regis suite is fully booked and Platinums can only be upgraded up to those suites.
The penthouse room is not ready at that time.
She offered a paid upgrade to Caroline Astor suite, however the rate is even higher than if I book the Caroline Astor Suite straight away
Another option she offered was 1 category downgrade.
Since I need to meet some friends at that time, I told the check in staff to let me know once the original room is ready.
The hotel finally call me at 4.30 pm to inform me that the room is ready.
I return to the hotel later at night and make another enquiry to the night shift reception staff about the promotional upgrade, and after check the original confirmation email (and 1 hour later), she and another girl finally assign the Knickerbocker Suite.
It was clear that the hotel was fully booked at that time (hence I can't claim it was a Platinum upgrade failure either).

Comments: Received an email asking for my arrival time so they could better prepare for my stay. I said I would like to check-in at 1 pm. I arrived without my luggage at 12:30 to see if room was ready and was told it would not be until 6 pm. I asked agent to escalate to a manager to see if they could find me another suite which they did, and would be available at 2 pm. No idea why I was assigned to a suite that wouldn't be available until 6 pm when I asked for 1 pm check-in.

Comments: one of the smaller suites i have ever stayed in but good enough given the small room sizes in new york....i initially had a 5 night stay & had applied suite nights....then i extended the stay on the last day for another night....it was too late to attach suite nights for the last day but the property allowed me to retain the suite....

Two Bangkok stays
1 Royal Orchid Sheraton. Executive suite, 2118. IMHO, the best value in town but the location is not for everyone. I love it.
2 Aloft Soi 11. Suite 2711 ( smoking floor so not for everyone, I don't smoke but it doesn't bother me). Suite upgrade is rare , I'm about 3/30, as it's not part of the T&C. Nice hotel and fortunately no longer party central.
Both were cheapest pre-paid rate.
