What are people's experiences with master billing and upgrades? I have a one-night stay next week at the Westin St Francis (SF) on a master-billed block of rooms. Wondering if I should expect any effort at all.

Comments: I got three free nights for 36,000 points and then called day of check in (right after midnight) and asked if they had any suites. I called under the guise of being a new customer and they said they had different suites available. I then told them I already had a reservation and that I'm an SPG Plat and would like to upgrade to one of the available suites. The person on the phone "put in a note" that I requested a suite, but this specific property had a policy about assigning upgrades at the counter w/ manager approval.

When I showed up, I reminded (didn't ask) the front desk that I had a suite upgrade. And when they said, "Oh yes, you'll be in an executive suite" I replied, "I was told that the Pres Suite is available and I'd like that one." Woman goes to the back to "ask the manager". 90 seconds later she comes out with the good news.

Best upgrade so far!
Which hotel is this?

I'm down for getting free upgrades but you lied to them multiple times; first being a new customer; then about having a confirmed upgrade; and finally about the Presidential, which is NOT in the upgrade pool in almost any property

Property: Sheraton Marina San Diego Hotel Na Marina

Room booked: Standard Room
Room received: Marina/Bay View Double Room High Floor
Award stay: Yes

Asked about a suite upgrade and was told none were available, even though when I checked online a few hours earlier there were suites available. Asked for a 4:00 PM checkout and was told the hotel was fully booked for the following night so only granted a 3:00 PM checkout. Later in my room checked and the hotel had lots of availability for the next night, including rooms using points+cash. In the morning called and was allowed 4:00 PM check out since my room had not been scheduled for anyone else.

Room booked: Superior King Bed
Room received: Royal Suite
Award stay: yes
BRG stay: no

Comments: Royal Suite upgrade to forego a late checkout. I'll take it considered this was a full points stay anyway. Enjoying every last moment until Marriott takes over and everything goes to hell.

Was it for a special occasion (eg. birthday etc.) by any chance? This hotel does not typically upgrade past the Madison Suite category. How busy was the hotel when you were staying?

It was not a special occasion, no. I was just in the city overnight business related.

As far as how busy it was, its hard to judge. There was definitely room availability on the app, but there was a few people in the lobby waiting for rooms to be ready past the check in time. It seems they were getting over a busy day, and then gearing up for another one (considering they offered me this upgrade in lieu of a late checkout).

With that being said, the Royal Suite is nice, but the room itself is very dated. This was my first visit to the NYC St Regis, but for a property commanding the type of rates and/or points they do, I probably would not stay again, and almost always choose the four seasons over the regis. The historic/art-deco type stuff just doesn't do it for me. The bed was no better than one at a Sheraton. The room service offerings and presentation was very basic for the prices. The nicest part about the room was the marble bathroom.

Sounds nice, slightly jealous as unfortunately I'm just about to check out from a much less satisfactory stay and move to the SGS. Last time I stayed here was great, this time not so much.

Property: The Athenee Hotel, Bangkok
Date(s): June 2018 (1 night)
Room booked: Athenee King non-smoking
Room received: Royal Club King smoking
Award stay: No
BRG stay: No
SNAs redeemed: N/A
Comments: For some people this is probably a minor thing, but one of the only things a luxury hotel can do to really annoy me is give me a smoking room that smells strongly of smoke. Even stranger, basically every category of non-smoking room and suite was available online, I wasn't checking in until after 8pm and I had booked the hotel limo from the airport so the hotel knew exactly what time I was arriving. Moved straight to a non-smoking room after going back to ask. No service recovery attempted (or attempt to ask how my stay was at check out). Just sloppy.
