However, them being full and cleaning rooms in time is their operational issue, not yours as a guest. They also can't take away an upgrade because you are invoking the late checkout benefit.
You may rationalize it by saying they would have taken away your upgrade etc, but I would suggest standing up more for your earned benefits if it makes a difference on a stay. 4 pm late checkout guaranteed means exactly that. If they didn't confirm at check in, I would occupy the room and worry about confirming the checkout the next morning.

I haven't stayed there but had a reservation I had to cancel. Good rates and lots of variety of rooms.

I've had some hotels say you need to request the late checkout (even if not granted) at initial check in - I only meant if they were using it as ammo to futz with an upgrade, I would make the requested known but follow up on it after occupying said upgrade.

Comments: I got three free nights for 36,000 points and then called day of check in (right after midnight) and asked if they had any suites. I called under the guise of being a new customer and they said they had different suites available. I then told them I already had a reservation and that I'm an SPG Plat and would like to upgrade to one of the available suites. The person on the phone "put in a note" that I requested a suite, but this specific property had a policy about assigning upgrades at the counter w/ manager approval.
When I showed up, I reminded (didn't ask) the front desk that I had a suite upgrade. And when they said, "Oh yes, you'll be in an executive suite" I replied, "I was told that the Pres Suite is available and I'd like that one." Woman goes to the back to "ask the manager". 90 seconds later she comes out with the good news.
Best upgrade so far!
