From an internal viewpoint, beds have to match heads. While it is possible for a small child to sleep in a king bed with both parents, it is often designated as for two persons only. So, a bed for the child would be required under such circumstances.

Picking a random date (tomorrow) and pricing up a Junior Suite, King bed, I get :
1 Adult : CNY 952
2 Adults : CNY 952
2 Adults + 1 child (under 17) = CNY 1,302
Extra/child rollaway = (an additional) CNY 350 per rollaway per night

Could someone explain how this hefty surcharge for the child squares with 'sleeps free in existing bedding' ?
Rollaway is additional bedding. Additional = not existing in the room if you don't pay for it.

I'm not sure what's confusing about that?

Ah perhaps I understand. Normally you can book for 2 adults and then clarify with the hotel that you won't need additional bedding and then (in my experience) hotels in Asia rarely if ever levy any further charges. If there are charges they tend to be tax-related (i.e. hotel is taxed on a per head basis and passes the cost along to you).

i would do the same thing....i often come across similar situations when traveling with my 2 infants....i have usually found the hotels willing to work with you in this regard....

I remember a similar setting in Japan where a base room for 1 person was X and reserving the same room for 2 people would be 2X ...

For the OP, reserving two regular or deluxe rooms could end up being cheaper than the suite + rollaway. Assuming they have connecting rooms, this could end up being better than the suite with the rollaway taking up the additional space on the junior suite.

However, separate rooms might not be acceptable with a child unless the hotel will confirm that you will be given adjoining (not just adjacent) rooms. This isn't common in many countries.

This is reflective of the way booking engine is set up, and a common issue across all chains.
Just book for two if extra bed for a child is not needed.

Especially with this being china it is absolutely common for multiple kids to share bed with parents and noone ever pays extra for kids in the room.

Adjoining and adjacent are synonyms. The term hotels use for rooms with an internal doorway is "connecting."

Amazingly it never happens to me. Maybe because I read the information before booking? And "gouging" is a rather strong term. "Gouging" would be the right term for US or Asian rates which are "++++" for every customer. Hotels however calculate their rates different in every region. Given that it is simply a approach to the same aim: making business
