frequent traveler charge on folio?
Checked out from a Sheraton this morning and I had a charge titled 'frequent traveler' for 4.44...what is this and why was I charged it?

The hotel probably has a better idea than we do. Did you ask them?

Heaven forbid hotels go down the car rental agents' route, most of which now charge if you want to acrrue FF points with them.

Was the charge disclosed at the time of booking (for example, on your confirmation?) or in the announcements part of the hotel's Starwood website? Is there a resort/facilities fee or any sort of service charge, such as for housekeeping or for baggage porterage (which might be about this amount)?
The amount is in the range of a local tourism tax/fee. It's unlikely to be a resort fee, unless the facilities fee is normally more and is discounted for SPG elites.
Is the fee some obvious multiple of the points you earned?

Could it be state/local tax on the cash portion?

It is possible that the reservation was not set up correctly in the PMS and this was the amount that was in fact supposed to be billed to SPG for the points portion of your stay...

The charge seems too low for this. Even if the hotel is empty, SPG in principle should pay enough for the award stay to cover marginal costs such as housekeeping services and heat/AC/electric/water.

This ended up being the case. After I emailed the above email the hotel reached out to me and explained it and refunded the charge. Thanks all.

That's a heckuva rate SPG gets for the room.
Sheraton SLC is category 3, so 7,000 points per night. $4.44/7,000 = 0.063 cents per point. Interesting.
