Correct for this situation, but on the MR side, Gold will lose lounge access, so the blanket statement that lounge access policies are changing still applies.

Correct but not in context to the situation. The SPG Rep was just wrong since the changing policies had nothing to do with Gold having access to a Sheraton lounge.

However, MR Golds (50 nights required) become regular Plat in the new program, same as SPG Plat50, and will get lounge access. It would only be comped categories of Gold who remain Gold at risk for losing lounge access compared to previous policies. [This might include UA elites who get courtesy MR status, just like some MR elites get UA Silver, formerly UA Gold form PPs, RIP, it was a nice benefit while it's lasted.]

Lounge access with gold WAS only reason I was loyal to Marriott, now just find the best location, price and amenities

‘Loyalty’ gone same as with United

Confused... If you were qualifying for Gold in the legacy MR program you would now qualify for Plat in the new program with the same number of stays and still have lounge access. If you were getting Gold through some status match and will now no longer be getting lounge entry, were you really a loyal, regular Marriott guest or were you a very occasional guest for whom Marriott has decided the extra marketing expense is not worth the little bit of business they get in return?

When the lounges are too crowded guests who stay at the chain frequently get upset and start looking at other options. It is one thing to encounter a crowded lounge if you are only staying in the chain two nights a month. It is quite another to have crowded lounges every morning when you are staying in hotels four nights a week, three weeks a month. If you were running the hotel, would you want to cram in the people who stay at the chain maybe 25 nights a year and lose the people who stay 144+ nights? Or would you be willing to give up those with fewer stays to keep the large group with more stays? And MR has many guests who stay that often. Many. One of the 4x3'ers is equal to six of the twice-a-monthers.
