Almost certainly this is the Marriott Rewards effect on the SPG program. This property has been the most redeemed property in Canada. That might change a little at 12,000 points.

They keep tweaking. It's now 38-2 (including one double-up).

The Westin Warsaw moves from a 2 to a 3? LOL.

Anyway... not too much to worry about in here... I like the moves down in New Orleans. But overall - nothing too bad either way except for a few hotels here and there.

Agreed! Stayed @ Metropol over Halloween last weekend on our first visit to BEG and it was fantastic! The spa is wonderful, and what's not to complain about a free massage! It's an easy direct flight from Abu Dhabi, and may just have to go back this year.

Super surprised by the demotion of the Atlantis by Giardino in Zurich (Design Hotel) from a 7 to a 6. It's a seriously good hotel.

Might it have something to do with the appreciation of the CHF rather than the quality of the hotel?

The categories have NOTHING to do with the quality of the property. The categories are not synonymous with AAA Diamonds or some star rating. The categories are revenue based.

Bearing in mind the evidence of the 'devaluations' for U.K. and Canada in this years category changes, can you say this still a cast-iron and verifiable fact ?

Appreciation of the CHF vs. USD would tend to send the category up, not down, if CHF rates stayed the same.

Starwood Lurker has said that categories are set by projected average daily room rate. Use of point categories by definition implies banding. A currency-converted rate could drop, but not enough to fall into a lower award category. We can't assume ADR in local currency stayed flat where currencies dropped vs. USD.

If you have the data sets and analytical skills to show local currency room rates and many-country exchange rates vs. USD, applied across all SPG properties and several years of category changes

DO IT

and SHOW IT

Cherry-picking a few examples in a single year is child's play.

Until then, I'm going to trust the veracity of Starwood Lurker's statements in this. He has - over the years - shown himself to be a knowledgeable guy who is careful and specific in forum statements.

Yes, back in 2012, hence my question. Is it still so ?

Not without input from the Lurkers who have not recently opined on this issue. But then, you knew that!

It was a good deal a couple years ago when there was no resort fee and free parking...but the fee has ruined it, and a cat change is icing on the cake.

A few months ago it was more expensive than the W Westwood, which was ridiculous.

This property also plays dumb with the alternate amenity due to charging a resort fee.

When over 90% of those are in places you don't care about, it's hard to get excited.
Actually, two Canadian properties are going down and I stay at both of them, one of them last week.

Cheers,

I've noticed the prices have been way up lately. Low dollar has been attracting a lot of conventions and travel. Tourism has been especially strong. Probably helps explain the mystery of some of the category increases in Canada.

Cheers,
