Considering that point redemption is quite high for SPG in Taipei, the Courtyard as a Cat 5 seems like a good way to redeem if one is tight on points.

Not right at the airport, but a half-hour away from MCI is the excellent Sheraton Overland Park. There is a full Marriott there too, but I think the Sheraton is the best choice.

So neither is better than the other in New Zealand...

Accor is dominating there including 3 Sofitels and a Pullman and a Sofitel So under construction. Hilton already has 5 places in the country and plans for more. Park Hyatt is under construction in Auckland.

Not any single SPG or Marriott in the whole country...

no, but as mentioned Autograph is what to watch. hmm, do they still do ashford castle and dromoland castle? thought they got rid of those when they got rid of orient express (belmond) trains.

RC Reserve brand is not part of rewards (along with RC singapore)

A friend gave me some insight last year.

Downtown, there is a R-C, Marriott, historic Renaissance and Autograph. Plus one or two other brands. A buddy told me they are looking at a JW Marriott and a 2nd R-C in Univ. Circle near the museums.

Starwood is playing catch up . Downtown there is a very very nice Westin, & Aloft and soon to be Le Meridien. The W is planned for the Warehouse or Gateway District as well as a luxury boutique property near Perk Park. Since Hilton built a Convention property, Sheraton is looking at adding one as well.

You can add Omaha, Lincoln, Madison, Tulsa and Des Moines to the list as well.

Omaha only has a rundown Sheraton and an Element and Des Moines only has a Sheraton in West Des Moines. Tulsa only has an aloft but the Marriott has several FS properties. (In fact the Ren is one of my kids favorite hotels and they have stayed hundreds of nights right alongside me) Madison only has a Sheraton but in fairness I haven't stayed there just the FS Marriott. Lincoln has no SPG properties. It might be necessary for folks to travel to Des Moines, Madison or Lincoln since they happen to be the location of the state governments.

You can add the whole state of SD since spg only has one property. The Springhill suite in Deadwood is another great Marriott property (not a full service but they have a bar and attached restaurant and casino)
Both Madison and Des Moines have excellent HPs downtown.

The Madison Sheraton seems fine, although it's out of town. IIRC the indoor pool could use some renovations. I think their lounge had free alcohol about five years ago, but I haven't stayed recently.

I can't picture any full service Marriotts in Madison. In Des Moines, it's an older convention property but IIRC there's a newer Renaissance.

Press Hotel - Autograph. Newish hotel built in an old newspaper headquarters. Spacious room, good toiletries, good restaurant, etc

Slightly better than the comparable Westin based on TripAdvisor

Quebec City...the Delta beats Hotel Pur and 4pts Levis. This may flip when Pur finishes its renovations but right now the Delta is your best option.

Again, I'm sure there are plenty of other cities where the reverse is true (like London as previously discussed), I just looked at Paris since I'm going there next year and I was a bit surprised.
Ah got it.

I'm going from memory here but I think Marriott, when it acquired RC, was prohibited from having a RC in either London or Paris (something to do w/ the current Ritz that exists in London & Paris).

I think there was a Ren that opened not long ago that was supposed to in cool area/be a bit more trendy but I'd have to look it up. There are 3 Autographs in France, but not in Paris.

Cheers.

Except the Westin Cape Town is by far the nicest hotel of the SPG/Marriott (including Protea) line-up.

This can become a worthless thread if we don't simply accept the following likely outcome:

Marriott will win almost always whenever there is a RC or EDITION and no StR or Lux Collection.

SPG will win almost always whenever there is a StR or Lux Collection and no RC (or the rare EDITION).

Between EDITION and W, it's usually the EDITION--but there are only 4. The Ws are MUCH better now.

When the best is a JW or W or even Lux Collection, it's more likely a toss up based on style/location preference.

After that, good luck wasting your time debating each person' peculiar preferences with the many other brands.
