FAQ :
http://members.marriott.com/faq/#will-rewards-and-spg-be-turning-into-one-program
Will Rewards and SPG be turning into one program?
These are two of the best programs in the industry, and we want you to benefit from everything that makes SPG and Rewards great. We don’t anticipate that the two programs will come together before 2018, and we will keep you informed of any updates. In the meantime, there’s no change to how you book reservations, manage your accounts or earn Elite night credits, points and miles in the current programs
Status Matches
MR Platinum <--> SPG Platinum
MR Gold <--> SPG Gold
MR Silver <--> SPG Preferred Plus
MR Member <--> SPG Preferred
If your status changes (i.e. Gold->Plat) in one program, your status in the other program will be automatically upgraded within 24 hours per Marriott FAQ
You can now link your Marriott Rewards or Ritz-Carlton Rewards account with your SPG account.
To link your accounts, log in to either account at:
http://www.spg.com/linkmarriott
http://members.marriott.com/
It will be a 3:1 transfer ratio between MR-SPG
If I have Lifetime Status in one of the programs, will I also get it in the other program when I link my accounts?
This is the Official Answer : "We appreciate your loyalty! Lifetime Status is specific to the program that you earned it in. While linking accounts will not result in Lifetime Status in the other program, your Elite status will be matched to the same Elite tier in the other program. Any existing Lifetime Status you already hold within either program will still be enjoyed within that program. We’re working on more ways to recognize your loyalty and Lifetime Status as we work towards harmonizing the programs, which we don’t anticipate happening until 2018."
Transferring points from SPG to MR does NOT change lifetime MR points.
Transferring points from SPG to MR does NOT count as activity & therefore does not extend the expiration date of points.

For anyone who is attending the NYC gala, please DM me. For everyone else, there's even more bad news on the horizon. Starwood's Canadian CCC in facing death from a thousand cuts. Employee benefits have been slashed or denied as Marriott shifts call centre operations to Mexico.

X2 source? I think until there is an official announcement it's mere speculation some most likely well founded others wishful thinking. In the end all these programs are changing just as travel is changing in many ways it's just not fun anymore save some nice international flights. One's "free" nights are not so free anymore. We can all thank "equity capitol" for most of this crap. I know as I own a construction company dealing with many of the flags. I have seen stuff that is not printable.

Damon, I agree however until we see the detail in the beast we just worry as far too much speculation now.

I will admit that I am surprised there are over 300 posts discussing this on Marriott and little here. I suppose everyone knows how useless it is to speculate. Fortunately we won't have to wait too long for verified details
The only potentially good thing about speculation is that if it turns out better we will be relieved.

Just to be perfectly clear, the new Marriott Rewards/Starwood Preferred Guest program is not starting August 1. Marriott is giving a heads up in announcing details of the new program, status levels, related requirements and changes to benefits, over the next couple of weeks so that no one can say they were unaware of the changes! These changes will not go into effect until January 2019, and really won't impact anyone's status until 2020!

A couple of the Bangkok hotels boast of 50+ Platinum guests per night. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is common around the world.
From higher end Bangkok ones like the SGS and WGS, to the Royal Orchid, and even the lower 4Pts and Aloft properties, I see NO reason to stay at ANY of them without the current benefits.
Imagine staying at the ROS in one of their crappy standard rooms with no Lounge, upgrades, or breakfast.
**Losing 50 Plats a night = over 18,000 room nights per year! Per hotel.
Do they think there are no choices? We’ve all got status with other chains! Status matches will be our parachutes!

A statement that poster has heard would be more accurate. Seems like only a handful of people can post with the level of clarity suggested by that post and they're not posting because they don't want to get fired for violating their NDA.

I didn't realize John was copying FT. He usually mentions that when he gets info here... in this case he didn't. Annoying. Sorry for posting something that was already here.
