Heading down to Ft. Lauderdale for memorial day weekend. It was a tossup between C&P for the weekend at the Diplomat and bouncing back and forth between the other hotels for cash to end up with a free weekend night. Since the Ft. Lauderdale Westin is only $89 a night, it would have cost me about $100 more in cash, but I would have saved the the points portion and ended up with a free weekend night. It took me about three days before I finally decided to just stay at the Diplomat and blow the points. It's just too nice of a property. I hope my flyertalk membership doesn't get revoked!

Had another great stay at the Diplomat. Very nice upgrade - had it pre-printed and ready to go when I arrived. The desk clerk commented that they always try to upgrade the plats (as we know). The only difference since the last time I was there (it's been a little while) is that the executive loung now give you a zero $ bill instead of having a tip jar. I actually prefer this, since I don't like have to worry about carrying tip money around when I go to the lounge.

Only downside was the standard slow valet service. Even when I called down, I ended up waiting 10-15 minutes. There were about 10 valets standing around and its wasn't busy at all. There should be some way to run a better valet service.

Oh, and last time I was there, there was a a Ms. Hooters contest going. No such luck this time.

If there ever was a "sure thing" with upgrades for Platinums, this place is it. I hate to jinx it, but I'm running a 100% upgrade rate at this place.

I highly recommend this to any SPG Plat who wants a sunny vacation spot. You can be almost guranteed of a great room, and you will have 3 pools, 9 restaurants, and an executive lounge. It is also within 20 minutes of Fort Lauderdale beach and 35 to South Beach. An outstanding value.

Is the Executive Club open on weekends?

Yes.

I was tempted by the new W FLL and W South Beach for my trip last weekend to South Florida (really just to take advantage of $250rt US A fares ex-DCA).

But the platinum treatment at the Diplomat is really still just too good to pass up. There really is no better Platinum property in all of Starwood.

It's still a well-maintained property, Platinums still get suites, and the club lounge remains excellent.

The renovation hasn't changed much in the suites, but flat screen TVs are nice and I really dig the new carpeting.

Still love the 33rd floor club lounge. The indoor seating is comfortable, the lounge offers free wifi, and of course the outside seating looking out at the ocean on one side and the intracoastal on the other is just phenomenal.

Breakfast is pretty much the same as always, nice pastries and lox. As previously reported they've gone from Fiji water to Nestle. Fine, it's nice to grab a couple waters on the go. Also previously reported they bring you a $0.00 guest check at breakfast. I don't get the purpose, other than prompting for a tip. The one real downgrade is that the evening dessert service wasn't being offered during our stay, they instead added just a couple dessert items to the pre-dinner appetizers. Hopefully the suspension is only temporary because the desserts used to be a highlight.

Doing a long weekend towards the end of August. Trying to decide on a property in the FLL area. At the moment I have the W FLL booked for one night and using my free weekend night in SOBE W on the other.

My question is should I stick with the FLL W or change to the Diplomat? I will have a car so no worries on the driving part. I am SPG Gold so the Plat. upgrades and special treatment means nothing because I am pretty sure I wont see the Plat. perks.

Your comment made me laugh because when I was in FLL for several days in January, I had planned to bounce back and forth from the Diplomat to the Westin Ft. Lauderdale in order to increase my stays. I made the "mistake" of starting at the Diplomat. After the first night...I couldn't bring myself to move over to the other Westin. I called the front desk to see if I could change and keep my good rate for the second night (no problem) as well as a third night under Cash & Points (no problem and...for about 4000 points plus about $90..one of the great SPG bargains).

I had a ocean view corner on the next to top floor (33?) but had to change it to a lower floor (20?) because I was unable to get a VZW broadband or cell phone signal on the higher floor! As always the staff was very patient as I tried a couple of rooms before my phone came up with more than 1 bar showing. Since I was staying over the weekend visiting family, I was able to enjoy the pool and beach areas more than usual. The pool bar was great to have lunch, a beer (or 2?) and watch the Giants/Eagles playoff game...though I wasn't real happy with the results.

This hotel's program for plats and all guests should be the model for the whole system. For that matter, the hotel's architectural design is wonderful...especially in creating all those corner suites! ^

I can't imagine considering any other SPG property in the FLL area for future trips.

How is the treatment for Golds? I'm using a free night over Labor Day and torn between paying for 2 more nights on my own here or possibly moving to a diff location (Westin Colonnade Coral Gables). If this is a pretty safe bet for upgrade, even on Labor Day, then I'd def prefer to stay here. Just not sure of the odds.

gleff's wonderful pictures brought back some really fond memories of our trip to the Diplomat.

We look to be back at the end of the year sometime ^

Golds are treated like the wanna be Plats that they are and usually shunned to the lowest floor rooms facing the garage. :D

Actually, I would bet that they are treated extremely well since this hotel's management seems to really "get" the whole SPG program. I think this thread includes the name, phone and/or email address of a Platinum coordinator type person for the property. I suspect she could be helpful in managing your expectations properly. On Labor Day, there won't be any conference business, which often saps up the corner suites, but they may be pretty full with vacationers. Those suites are nice for a family with small kids so availability may be a problem.

They might be able to "guaranty" you a nice view room (which are pretty good size anyway) and perhaps club access (high $$ value due to breakfast, etc.). Give them a call!

Did you have any luck?
I'm booking an award stay for the first weekend in Oct. for a wedding anniversary / post-Killers concert celebration!
Was wondering how your stay turned out and what you scored as gold.

Mozzarella Sep 16, 09 2:43 pm

FYI, I was there for three nights over the Labor Day Wknd using the FWN promo. Frankly when you're there using FWN on a "Standard" room (even as a Gold like I was), I didn't expect anything but was pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to an oceanfront room. I also used 7500 Starpoints (2500/day) as an instant reward at check-in to get Club access.

All in all a FANTASTIC stay and I highly recommend the Westin Diplomat.

Bean Sep 16, 09 3:01 pm

Thanks Mozzarella...

Sounds like the chances are good for at least an ocean-view room, which I would be more than happy with.

So the 2500 pts for club access was well worth it?
