Announcing SPG’s 2016 Category Changes : Effective 1 March 2016

Our annual category changes will go into effect on March 1, 2016.

Just over 20% of hotels are changing category; of these, 12% are moving up and 8% are moving down including some favorites such as The St. Regis Bangkok, Thailand & Le Meridien Bora Bora.

We’re not adding new categories or changing category pricing at this time.

Here’s a look at the preliminary list to help you maximize your Starpoints. Please review the changes to decide if you’d like to redeem your Starpoints prior to - or after - the changes take place on March 1, 2016. Also in March, select Design Hotels will be available for redemption – look for more to come on that.

Please note that Category adjustments are always subject to change. While we make every attempt to provide you the latest, most accurate information, adjustments may be made before or after the category change date, March 1, 2016.

Again, you can view the list here.

Just checking to see if anyone was paying attention.

Seriously, though, I'll ask that we take another look at this one.

With the Great Northern and Park Lane going up to Cat 6, it looks like Central London is now 100% Cat 6. Yikes. Though I suppose it actually makes life easier in some ways, because those two hotels have some significant disadvantages (tiny rooms and general oldness respectively, though with the renovation the Park Lane might have gotten better), so at least now I wouldn't feel bad shelling out Cat 6 points for one of the other properties in London.

But regardless, Lurkers thanks for posting and alerting us -- always appreciate the opportunity to get in some last bookings at old rates.

Wow - 3 not especially special SF properties vault into Cat 6 territory.

The continued success of Airbnb is assured.

Looks like SPG and Marriott are both hard at work trying to align their respective point values

I don't mind the category changes. SPG can do as they please. I do mind the 10-day notice being considered 'enough' --- wouldn't hurt to show your members a little more TLC by giving at least a 30-day notice, as most major programs do.

A 10-day notice is a slap in the face, IMO.

Is this a Mensa quiz?

Sorting by Region and Country, but then showing all the increases in a country first, by state/province (blanks first, of course), city and property, then all the decreases by country, state/province, city, and property afterwards.

Because having the decrease in Costa Mesa right between the increases in Agoura Hills and Culver City would make too much sense? Better to have it 79 positions lower on the list, right where we would look for it??

Do I win?

Thanks William....if it turns out to be the most beautiful Four Points in the world, thus warranting a C5 rating, then I might need to put it on my bucket list

Brutal. Turkey, Russia, Brazil, Columbia, Canada, and Dubai are down. Almost everywhere else is up.

Get in before March 1st!

Not really any good changes for me, but I'll take no new categories as a minor win.

Nights and Flights

If we book a nights and flights award now in a category 4 property, will we be able to change the dates later if the property goes up to a category 5? It looks like the rules for nights and flights have no language around this. Was looking at a Disney vacation with the wife and kids but the dates might change due to work schedules.

Just going through the list and that may be applicable to my situation;

LM Maurice goes up from 2 to 3. It was super value at cat 2 (eg. 5 nights/ 19,000 points)

LM Fishermans Cove from 6 to 5, sounds fair. But hey, they have already pre-upgraded me to a junior suite for a stay in a few weeks so ^

W Retreat Bali to a Cat 7 Are they kidding me? I'd go straight to Bora Bora thanks for that price.

LM Bangkok to 4? LM Chiang Mai to 3? Big call and makes these places less desirable in highly competitive areas.

LM Vienna is going up from 4 to 5. I'd better lock in my Christmas 2016 bookings now.

Westin Malta goes to a 5? hmmm... ok.
