Resort Fee.....what's the point?

Just got back from the Orchid on the big island of Hawaii. This resort charged a $12.50 per day "resort fee". For that I got use of pool towels, free local and 800 calls, and a newspaper in the morning. It's not like the fee was optional. I couldn't say "I don't plan to use your towels at the pool so don't charge me the fee". I'm just wondering what the point is. Just add the "fee" into the room price. Otherwise you just cheapen the resort by making the guests feel that they are being nickeled and dimed.

mandatory "resort" fees (and the like) should be reported to the BBB and whoever else will listen.

this fee is just a way to make the room rate appear lower. it's a marketing scam. offering a newspaper and towels to the pool is not worth a resort fee.

it's so lame to charge for towels at a pool. how silly....and sad.

It's an easy way to generate revenue on free nights, just like the small charge some hotels pass on for unlimited local calls.

Nickeled and dimed? Kind of like the cost of the soup and sandwich from room service?

dAAllas, I think I see a trend. Is there anything else you "want to get off your chest" about how outrageously expensive top shelf hotels in Hawaii are? Maybe you can get a good deal at one of the Outrigger's next trip and leave The Orchid to those of us who don't mind being nickeled and dimed. :-)
