Doesn't have to be a name at all. Do you use a password generator? Why can't your mother's maiden name be xy!!235T$kIP_pX ???

I don't think that the questions are that bad. They promote travel and brand awareness. Furthermore, they are fairly easy to remember.

At best, "security questions" are just another password, which means there is no improvement to security vs just using a single password (as the attack vectors are the same). At worst, the answers are easily guessable as suggested upthread because most people will tend to pick answers that can be easily guessed, and therefore make their accounts less secure, not more secure.

Making your account more secure would involve requiring the use of a hardware token.

Just curious, has anyone been asked to answer one of these new security questions yet to confirm it works OK ?

I'm now asked one additional security question when using a new device/browser, but it's always the 'verbal password' question (which, in itself, is a bit perverse when you think about it....), so haven't had to try and remember whether I put my favourite hotel in Caps or not.

No, they only demand something you can remember.

I'd be happy if they were. It's far more secure (especially if you use non-standard capitalization).

Yes, and on the same computer where I just answered the questions.

The system is most definitely NOT case-sensitive. The input field forced my answer to upper case.

What does "verbal password" mean??

I got the e-mail today, picked the 4 security questions, and vaguely remember seeing something about my "verbal password" so I just thought it meant if I called in I would "say" the password I usually type...

Well I just tried to log on and it asked for my "verbal password", I typed my usual password, and was told it was incorrect.

Can anyone help?

Your verbal password is not...or rather, should not...be your web password. It would be the password that you would verbally give to any SPG associate when prompted for it during the award booking process.

But how do I get one/set one? I went back to the e-mail, clicked on where it said "answer the 4 questions" and it just brought me back to the same sign-in screen that said "we don't recognize the blah blah - what is your verbal password?"

I don't recall ever choosing one, and have never had a problem signing in before, so where/how do I fix this?

If you've never had a verbal password, you would need to call into the SPG Customer Contact Center, go through a 5-point verification process to prove ownership of the account, and then have the associate enter one for you.

Thanks! I'll do that tomorrow, I'm absolutely sure I've never done it before.

So once I call in and do that, and since I've already picked the 4 security questions on-line, am I now "done" and can expect the 150 points in a few weeks?
