This is a lot better promo for me than the previous promo and in conjunction with the targeted offer I end up well ahead. Just tweaked my bookings to get a couple of extra weekend stays to meet qualifying requirements for both promos.

Agreed, William is a huge asset to the company for maintaining their connection with frequent travelers. Even when SPG disappoints me, William always impresses me.

Some of you need to chill and get off your high horses.
While I find switching allegiance over a promo rather silly, I expect hardly anyone ever goes through with their threats. Too bad.

Cheers,

Cheers,
15 nights stayed so far at Hilton

And another 22 reserved with Hilton (basically the remainder of May). Since no promo for SPG in 1/2 April and May - I switched all stays to Hilton.

In June when new Starwood promo kicks in I will give SPG all stays where I can do Fri, Sat or Sun and Hilton will receive all mid-week stays.

I guess I'm in the "hardly anyone" group

Promos do shift behavior. If they didn't chains wouldn't use them. In my case, not eligible for the targeted promo and they offered no promo for 45 days. Further, the new mid-year promo covers leisure travel. They are getting exactly the behavior they want by incentivizing me the way they are... no stays during no promo period and all my stays during leisure starting in June.

It may be easier for people to see when I state this via the last paragraph - more positively. Starwood incentivizes me via their promos and it works. I stay exactly when they want/push me to. In my case there were 37 nights up for grabs. That's a lot of nights they could've seen had their promo been more broad or if they targeted me to get those nights.

With all the promos for the last year or so, it seems obvious to me that Stawood does not consider valuable those travellers like me whose stays are 99% one night, then on to the next stop. So the pending promo is (again) of no use to me.

In a way, the lack of an amazing promo presents an opportunity. It is a good time to redeem points (or cash and points) for award stays. There is little reason to have second thoughts about missing out on gaining more bonus points.

I'm booking a lot of one night weekend stays this quarter because I got the offer for double elite-qualifying stay credit. I'm not losing sleep over missing out on 1000 Starpoints (maybe $25 cash value?).

These guests are more costly to the hotel and they can earn SPG elite status with fewer nights (and lower total spend on average).

Similar to most of those who travel for business, I never hop hotels. I fly in on Mondays and check out Friday 50 weeks a year.

Given that, this promotion doesn't do anything for me and the majority of my demographic. Although there may not be many people like me, I am a high value individual customer (65k annually in room revenue alone).

Alienating this demographic by not giving them targeted promotions and offering promotions that specifically ignore them is not good for business. If 1000 people who, like me, are unhappy enough and take their business elsewhere, it would have a significant impact on their bottom line.

Quick math - 65k per customer * 1k customers = 65M decrease in revenues. This is a decent piece of their annual reported revenues of 3.5B (a little less than 2%).

Obviously that revenue loss would be offset by lowering rates to get that occupancy back, however, the impact will be felt.

TL: DR - If you are unhappy with the promotion, do something about it - take your business elsewhere.
are you sure your math is right? i thought SPG only gets a franchise fee or something small for each person who stays at an SPG hotel. most of your $65k spend does not go to starwood, but to the individual hotels. so i'm pretty sure you leaving is pretty small in the scheme of spg corporate.

Well, if at the same time at least get two separate rooms and take advantage of the additional bonus points. : )

Thanks for posting. This is not the most impressive promotion I have seen but will make me think of starwood for stays over Fridays or Sundays. And you guys, the starwood lurkers, do a great job! If occasionally you take a few bullets being the messenger, don't worry about it. They truly are not real bullets and we appreciate your involvement
