This would be really good news. I've stayed at the Royal Palm a number of times under various brands it has had over the years (Crowne Plaza, Melia and James) and last stayed in November when the W was far more than I wanted to pay. It is a good upper-end property (but not luxury) in an excellent location and pricing tends to be more reasonable than some of its neighbours (although I imagine that might change under Starwood).

On a side note, is the new brand really called The Collection? Doesn't seem a great idea just removing the word Luxury from another brand.

Yeah, I don't buy the new brand theory here.

Well, it will be a "collection" of something--just don't know what exactly just yet. They did announce on their latest earnings call that there will be a new category for hotels which do not fit existing brands--so that part is a definite. I'm sure once Starwood has at least a few hotels signed up, they will announce what the brand will officially be called.

Yes-- presumably it'll be for independent properties that wouldn't fit under the Luxury Collection brand, so we're looking at an upper-upscale collection of properties along the lines of Marriott's Autograph Collection and Hilton's new Curio Collection.

Agreed. Something like The Collective would have been better IMHO.

The Collective brings visions of Mao and Stalin.

Would think the Palace in San Francisco would be a candidate to move to this new brand.

An aloft is being built too, abeit at the more northern end of the beach. It's almost at where the free street parking starts.

Edit: Aloft being built in South Beach - more options.

Highly doubt that since the new "brand" was to be in addition to the Design Hotels.

So how is this different from LC? Less luxurious, since the word "luxury" is removed? More modern?

I think the new brand will give the hotels a bit more independence and not be tied to specific "brand" guidelines but who knows. Guess we will find out more in a few months.

My question, too. Luxury and modern aren't mutually exclusive, nor would the James Royal Palm seem out of place in the LC imo. Guess we'll need to wait for an announcement or more additions to really know.
