All SPG Members (not just Plat) get free internet when booking direct

I don't stay at SPG hotels hardly at all so feel free to tell me this is not news.

GET FREE INTERNET WHEN YOU BOOK ON SPG.COM, OUR HOTEL BRAND SITES OR SPG APPS.

Free for all members, "Premium" internet free for Gold and above.

Details: https://www.spgpromos.com/internet/?..._22509_Pref_EN
FAQs: https://www.spgpromos.com/internet/?..._22509_Pref_EN

No doubt to compete with Marriott's recent announcement to include free internet for all their members.

So the news is that now it's free for members at any level, not just Platinum.

"...WHEN YOU BOOK ON SPG.COM, OUR HOTEL BRAND SITES OR SPG APPS."

We announced this at Flyertalk last month, but thanks for bringing it to the forefront.

Nice benefit.

Now gold members will get the free premium internet in addition to their welcome amenity (formerly could get in room internet as their welcome amenity). But, there are a few tricky details as explained in their FAQ...

I have a few questions.
1) In order to get this benefit the stay has to be booked online though SPG at "qualifying rates." Does staying on points (having booked online) qualify for the free premium internet?
2) How many devices per member are included in this benefit?

The award stay must be booked through our digital channels to qualify.

I've had non-ideal experiences with this.

Last week at the W Barcelona, they asked me if as a SPG Gold I'd like Internet, Points or Drink. I said I'd like Internet and points. They said I had to choose. I said "but I booked on spg.com". They went to find a manager, who came out and said I could have both.

Just now I checked into the ITC Gardenia in Bangalore, and was given a welcome letter saying I could have Standard Internet, Points or Drink, and Premium Internet would be chargeable. I said "but I booked on spg.com" and they said it didn't change anything. Got online, pulled up the page, showed them it, got the manager out, he apologised and said that with the changes I could have both the points and premium internet.

(Didn't get to test it at my other starwood hotel since the 2nd of Feb, as my room rate there came with premium internet anyway)

Maybe I've been unlucky, but it seems hotels are at best needing to train their staff better on it, or at worst are cynically only offering it to people who both ask and push

Another #fail on this At checkout from the ITC Gardenia Bangalore, despite them eventually agreeing a little after checkin that premium internet would be free as SPG Gold + booked on SPG.com, at checkout my bill featured a premium internet charge for each day. They initially refused to remove it, saying that the gold welcome gift was basic internet only. After I showed them the starwood site, and insisted. They reluctantly agreed to phone a manager who agreed to waive the charges. However, I got the impression they thought they were doing me a favour by this, rather than it being what I was actually entitled to. More training remains required....
