Promo: 500 bonus Starpoints for updating your stay preferences profile, 15 Oct-15 Dec

I received an email from SPG last night, with the subject "Stay More Nights, Earn More Starpoints".

The email states:

"You’re registered for the SPG® More For You global promotion. Book your stay now and earn triple Starpoints® on eligible stays that include a Friday or Saturday night (Thursday or Friday night in the Middle East).

Plus, remember to add your stay preferences on your spg.com profile to earn 500 bonus Starpoints from 15 October until 15 December 2014. Update now."
[Bolding my own]

From the bold text, do you also infer we should be earning 500 bonus points for stays in that period (I'm not sure if it would be a one-off, or per stay), once we've updated our Platinum preferences? If so, I've stayed a few times already, and don't see any bonus points appearing yet. It's also the first I've heard of any such bonus, unless I'm confusing it with some other bonus promo?!

Confused!

JK Nov 11, 14 12:27 am

Just found this in the terms... Guess I should have checked that before posting! Either way, it's news to me! Just hope I made my update to my preferences within that time period. If not, I've just done it again now.

Still not entirely sure if it's just a one-off bonus, or per stay, but I suspect it's a one-off.

My Stay Preferences bonus: Registered members are eligible to receive 500 bonus Starpoints when updating the members spg.com profile online between October 15, 2014 and December 15, 2014. Updates made prior to registration are eligible, but only if the update falls within October 15 to December 15, 2014. The bonus will post to the registered member's account 2-4 weeks after the end of the promotion period. All members who are registered for the More For You promotion are eligible for the My Stay Preferences bonus regardless of whether they have an eligible booking in the promotion.

No. You "update" your profile once. You get the 500 points once.

I've updated the thread title to help ensure FT members are alerted to this promo.

Interesting that the email "remember to update your profile" wording suggests that we've already been told about this ....

Is there a link to register for this?

Nevermind. I re-read the promotion terms and saw that it is included with the More for You promotion.

Is this a targeted promo? Looks like I updated my preferences on Oct 17.

Not sure if it is targeted or not, but when I logged into my account upon getting this promo email, I was surprised that I never updated my personal preferences in the past. :o

500 freebies are always welcome from my fav Hotel program. ^

It's been promoted to Platinum members on the iPad app for the past two weeks.

Has someone already rec'd 500 points? I deleted change confirmation e-mail and I don't remember when I changed my profile first time -- maybe before Oct. 15th. :(.
If I change it now again, do I still get points now?
I guess this "subpromo" linked to the main one, so you need to stay AND updaye profile in order to get 500 pps...

Post #2 has your answer in the last sentence!

I cannot enter a preference for a higher floor. My only option is to select a preference for a lower floor (or not select at all). For elevator proximity, I can only select to be near an elevator. I cannot select a preference to be away from the elevator. Sure, I like the ability to add preferences, and an extra 500 Starpoints for doing so is nice, but I should be able to select a preference for a higher floor and to be away from the elevator. It shouldn't matter what status someone is for them to select preferences like these, as preferences are not guarantees.

Starwood may as well offer preference options for warm pillows and wet blankets.

I got the e-mail for the Stay More Nights and Update your Preferences 500 pt bonus offer, but my husband did not.

How can he get the 500 bonus pts, too, without the e-mail link?

I don't think the link is relevant. Sign up to the Stay More Nights promo, and update your preferences by going into your account at spg.com. I'm not sure if a stay is then physically required to trigger this - but that should be all. There is nothing special about the link, it just takes you to the page to update your preferences.

Eujeanie Nov 11, 14 10:10 am

Done! Any idea how long before the 500 pts show up?

Wiki. :)

Eujeanie Nov 11, 14 10:19 am

Ugh, 2-4 weeks! Has that been everyone's actual experience?

JK Nov 11, 14 10:21 am

"2-4 weeks after the end of the promotion period"
So hypothetically, no-one should know yet, since the promotion runs until December 15th 2014.

Eujeanie Nov 11, 14 10:26 am

 Yeah, I just saw 2-4 weeks and "assumed" it was after sign-up. Sorry.

I'm antsy to pull the trigger on a points stay and just need a few more points (and I don't want to buy them) so I'm a little anxious at the bit here.

I still would like for a Lurker to comment whether this was a targeted promo or not, i.e. for those of us that didn't get the email but signed up for the Stay More Nights promo and chose our Preferences, will we get the bonus?

This bonus is open to all members who register for SPG More For You and update their spg.com profile with their stay preference(s) within the parameters of the stated terms and conditions.

Does it matter which order we do it in? I clicked on the one link first in the email, and that was the one for updating my profile, and so I did that first. Some minutes later I went back to the email and clicked the other link and registered for the promotion. I got no confirmation email for the SPG More For You registration (even though I got two different kinds of confirmation emails for the profile update!), but when I tried right now to register for SPG More For You again it says I'm already registered.

The T&C's (posted in the Wiki) say, "Updates made prior to registration are eligible, but only if the update falls within October 15 to December 15, 2014."

Just a hypothetical...what if you have NO changes? What if everything in your profile was already the way you wanted it to be? Do you have to change "something" to get the bonus points?

Click something. Update. Un-click that something. Update again. :p

Eujeanie Nov 11, 14 1:44 pm

Yes, I did just that. But wondering "why" if everything was fine.

IIRC, the new "stay preferences" profile option, which you have to update in order to qualify for this bonus, was introduced with the new website launch on October 15, so this hypothetical situation will (should) not arise.

Thunderroad Nov 11, 14 2:47 pm

Thanks to the OP and others for the information on this. Not a huge bonus, obviously, but glad to get 500 points each for my wife and myself.

There has always been a "stay preferences" profile option. It was just expanded to add the Platinum preferences. It used to just have things like smoking/non-smoking. Therefore, this situation definitely arises. I had to add some bogus perferences just to force a change for +1's account.

Eujeanie Nov 11, 14 4:19 pm

Ok, good to know...I'm not plat, so I also had to force some bogus changes (added that I liked beach or golf or something), but nothing had materially changed.

It was expended to add new choices for ALL members, not just Platinums.

Yes, they added acessibility and floor preferences (at least I don't remember those from before), but the point is that it the profile option existed before, so your above point about the situation above not arising is most definitely wrong.

I can confirm it is not 2-4 wks after sign-up. I changed my preferences on Oct 15th (4 wks ago) and have not received any points. I guess we'll see them next year.

I have the same issues with the choices.

In addition, my preferences can depend on the particular hotel. In some locations, I want the room with the best view while in others I want the largest room, etc. This should be common sense, but AFAIK trying to change this for one reservation changes it for all other bookings too, so that I would almost need to continuously monitor this and make sure to re-change my preferences just before I think the property will preassign rooms.

I first removed a hotel from my preferred list. I don't know how it got there; I certainly never said that this place was my preferred hotel.

Then I messed around with room preferences on some bookings.

Eujeanie Nov 12, 14 1:20 pm

I also like different rooms for different reasons - high in a city to get away from street noise, low with an ocean view because we like to watch the waves. And I always put these requests into the comments/additionals box for each individual reservation - what happens to them then? Do they ALL go into preferences?

BigLar Nov 12, 14 5:34 pm

I've got a bunch of points that will expire around January. For me, this is an easy way to not only get some points, but also to extend the expiration date!

What you also can do is redeem points for a stay and the cancel it. That will create some activity on you account.

BigLar Nov 15, 14 3:21 pm

A little bit of confusion: I recall getting an email, but I seem to have misplaced it. Anyhow, when I signed on to my SPG account, a banner came up talking about the 500 point bonus. I went to my account and changed some things (including the 'stay preferences').

However, after re-reading this thread, it seems I also have to register for the More for You promo, for which I might need a link.

Am I remembering it rightly?
