Book with SPG card or Platinum amex?
Hello all,
If family member (daughter) has an Amex platinum, hence gold status, and spouse has SPG card and points, who should make booking (both are travelling).
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You should make the booking and guarantee it with your Amex since you have gold status, to receive the benefits. Upon checkout, pay the charges with your wife's SPG card. To make things easier, why not have your wife add you as an additional card holder to her SPG card? That way you benefit from the Amex provided SPG gold status, while still being able to accumulate extra SPG points by paying with the SPG card.
This is incorrect. Amex Plat provides for complimentary SPG gold to its cardholders.

Thanks for responses.
Just remembered spg card charges fees for foreign transactions, since this will be overseas, should use amex to actually pay, right?
Still reading up on sharing existing points.
Not adding my name to spouse's card since I have never had one and will wait for a good point offer.

If you want the (limited) benefits of Gold, then the Gold member should book and PAY for the room per the T&C's. If you want more points in the spouse's account, then they should book and pay for the room. Some properties have been sticklers about the member paying for the room to get credit for the stay.
Depending upon the property, if the room is booked by a non-status member and the member is present at check-in, they may extend benefits, but it's not required.

I thought this thread is about a new hybrid status.

It depends upon what you are trying to accomplish...

transfer starpoints from spouse's account to daughter's account (both have same last name, address, etc so should not be an issue);
use daughter's amex card to book using cash/points; she would accumulate the points, which is fine. But we would get free internet because of her gold status.
Does that make sense?
Thanks.

Ok, looks like the best course of action would be:
transfer starpoints from spouse's account to daughter's account (both have same last name, address, etc so should not be an issue);
use daughter's amex card to book using cash/points; she would accumulate the points, which is fine. But we would get free internet because of her gold status.

AMEX PLAT vs AMEX SPG payment (Canada)
Sorry for Hijacking the thread, and going OT. Missus LFC will be in BKK next week-end for a 3 night stay at the St Regis.
She reserved with her AMEX SPG CC, but plans on paying for all room, incidental charges on her AMEX Plats. Question is:
Does it make a difference which card she pays pays with? And will it have any efect on her points earning for SPG. It is a 3X points promo that she signed for last month for stay thru end of 2014. We like to accumulate points on SPG & Amex MR, so hence the 2 AMEX Cards.
Thanks,
LFC

so i assumed that it would take too long to apply for the gold status.
and it sounded like the points had to go to the wifes account...

The Amex Plat will be cheaper (no FX fee, at least if it's a US card). It will earn MR points.
The SPG Amex will cost more (3% FX fee for a US card). It will earn SPG points.
The SPG points you get for the stay (room charge, etc.) don't depend on how you pay.
