Rate for 3 vs. only checking in 2

Hi,

Would appreciate any insight to this. Had booked accommodation for 3 back in May (rate has additional charge for 3rd person) for a Luxury Collection property, using a "Preferred Rate" via spg.com.

Fast forward to night of check-in, where 3rd person couldn't make it (actually chose another hotel due to a personal situation). Room finally checked in with only 2 adults.

Should I only be charged with corresponding double occupancy rate, or would this only have been possible before the cancellation due date?

Thanks!

It may be up to the individual property, but I would say the latter.
