The annual flip flopping of the Westin and Sheraton in Puerto Vallarta is surprising as well. The Westin as a category 2 is one of the better redemption values in the system over the holiday periods IMO. The Sheraton as a Cat. 4 on the other hand, is probably never worth that many points.
As to Rome, didn't SPG loose a property? As to Puerto Vallarta, you are exactly right. Not sure I understand this one.

Overall, I'm OK with these.

We live about 90 minutes from Diseny World and go there frequently as we have Florida Resident Passes. The Sheraton Lake Buena Vista as a Cat 2 is a good deal. Great Pool. 3000 points for a weekend night is a deal, especailly compared to the Dolphin/Swan at 10,000. At the Sheraton LBV, they waive the resort and parking fee for Plats, plus give a full breakfast and 500 stay points. Availability is also excellent, compared to the Swolphin.

So a hotel that I want to book is going down, and has C&P available. If I book today can they adjust it later? Just afraid that it won't be available in a few weeks for the dates that I want/need.

This one stood out for me!

What a joke! Who do they think they are?

Wouldn't send even a homeless person there.

Annual Category Change Announcement 2014 [effective March 4, 2014]

For me the biggest surprises on the increase list are:
- Four Points Sheraton Miami Beach (this _ _ _ _hole wasn't worth the previous category)
- Properties in Greece
- W San Francisco (horrible Plat. recognition and lack of suite upgrades make this hotel of no interest even at its old category)
- Sheraton Towers Chicago
- St Regis Atlanta
- W LA Westwood

At 12,000 points per night it was a great option for the Atlanta area. At 20,000 - 25,000 points per night I'm no longer sure if that's the case for that particular market. I suppose I'll start staying at one of the W's either downtown or midtown but I do appreciate the announcement. Perhaps I'll scheduled a few stays prior to the change.
I agree about the change. However, it is often considered one of the two best hotels in the city (along with the Ritz). With all of the Cat4 hotels in the city and with the recent bump of the W Downtown to Cat5, I'm surprised it took this long. It does not carry the value at Cat6, but it would be tough to justify leaving it on the same level as the aging and pretentious W Downtown. My corporate rate, which is what I use when staying at the St. Regis when I'm in the area (date nights with the wife, etc.), only slightly increased for this calendar year (from $205 to $210).

Overall, the changes are quite great. I looked at my reservations for later this year and none were on there. That's good (although I was kind of selfishly hoping one of them would have dropped a category ... LOL!). I am also surprised that St. Regis Punta Mita stayed where it was... that's good for my anniversary trip in 2015.

Doubtful. But you have nothing to lose by booking it now anyway. If it's still open after 04 March, book the new one and cancel the old one. Otherwise, call and see if they'll do anything for you.

That's an interesting move. The country is on the cusp of civil war and the hotel has not even opened for one day under a Starwood flag and it is jumping up one category. I can't wait to visit it, of course! ^

clueless remark - what are you doing?

View from the lanai of our 1Bd OF WKORV villa (and just rented studio side) - so our cost for 7 nites is $1000 {cute wife not included} - you can't even get this villa with SPG - no matter how sweet your Plat status smells...

View from inside villa...

The St. Regis Roma as a cat. 7 is crazy and also not. The Eden is gone and if the Westin Excelsior will be sold also this year it will be the last 5 star spg hotel in town...

Just a note to ensure the focus of the thread is directed to category changes and not timeshares, and to mention that we should be extending a particularly warm welcome to SJChick : it's a rare event to be joined by a Lifetime Plat with a wealth of Starwood knowledge to share. ^
