They added more properties in 2013, hope they do that for 2014 too.

From our Platinum qualification email:

Please note that starting in 2013, you'll no longer receive a member kit in the mail unless you request one.

Honestly, with digital initiatives, I see SPG/Starwood investing less in a physical card and more in apps, that let you display your card.

When you show your card in a property restaurant as a non-guest, it just works so much more easily using a physical card instead of e.g. a phone.

And if your app shows - like mine - in 2013 expiring date 2015 some will have problems with this...

How so, what are the cons?

You lost me, I don't understand.

The app shows:
  • Member number
  • Member since date
  • Validity

The exact same thing my physical card shows, sans the valid date.

I have visited quite many properties, where pulling out a card you get a confused look from the server. It is taken back, where someone knows something, and 5 minutes later there's a slip receipt.

As long as the restaurant knows what to do, I'm sure they have no problems handling a phone. But when you're dining abroad and you already have that language barrier, it's another story.

The valid date was my problem. For the bartender it seems like a fake. In 2013 no physical card shows expiring date 2015...

I was unaware of that. However, that should not be your problem if the bartend "thinks" it's a fake. SPG/Starwood will have to do a better job of educating staff on the validity and look of a physical and electronic card.

LOL True but this is a "small" inconvenience that could be corrected very easily so no other guest/s have the same experience.
