Saw some post on one of the blogs so I thought I'd make a few charts. Hopefully useful. The point is to demonstrate that even with the transfer bonus, Starwood-->LAN is typically inferior to Starwood-->BA, but that is typically inferior to AMEX/Chase--->BA.
These graphs represent the number of Starwood points needed per mile of travel when transferring them into either LAN or BA distance based awards. It was meant to show the savings of using BA vs LAN at any distance of flight up to 3500 miles.

Here's a simpler version. It shows which program requires fewer Starwood points transferred to achieve a certain distance (in miles). These graphs take into account the 1:1.5 LAN transfer ratio as well as the 5k bonus on 20k starwood transferred.

So the awards are using BA avios and LA kms from the respective BA/LA ffp's??

I have converted the LAN awards into miles instead of KM's. So if you have a 1500 mile flight in coach, it would cost you 8k starpoints transferred to BA or 14.5k transferred to LAN.

As this is really about Starpoints and not Oneworld, I'm going to move it to the relevant forum.

Units are missing. Please explain?

Units for the X axis (horizontal) are the miles for the flight you want to redeem for. Under both programs, flights are one-way, no stopovers.

Units for the Y axis (vertical) are the number of Starpoints you'll need to take said flight, in thousands, assuming you transfer in 20,000-Starpoint increments.

I ran a similar set of computation for my most frequent destinations and generally found that Avios are usually a better value, particularly since the devaluation of LAN transfers from 2km/Starpoint to 1.5km/Starpoint. Plus, they are MUCH easier to redeem online.

Generally speaking, AVIOS represent a tremendous bargain for short/medium haul flights anyplace -- given that you can find availability!

Sill confusing. It is not hard to put text on the axis and text in the graph that explaines what it all means. All 3 class's could go in 1 graph
Is "miles" the flight distance in miles or the frequent flyer miles(km)?
