SPG Gold Status for just one stay with MasterCard World (AsiaPac only) -Valid July'15

I could not find a thread on this, so starting one for discussion.

If you've noticed, SPG had a promo till Mar2013, and how has extended it till July 2015, where members with address on file in Asia Pacific (Ex-Japan), get Gold status only with one stay after registering for the promotion, completing a stay at a participating hotel and then paying for it with your mastercard.

Here is the official SPG page and here is my analysis of it.

I used the promo to get Gold, although I would have been Gold anyway after 6 months.

I don't see much analysis in your article, but I would like to add the stay gives Gold, but one still needs 24 stays more for platinum despite the Gold status.

Any tip to share? I keep get a wrong message of "The first 6 digits of World or World Elite MasterCard® card number you entered is not valid". I was using 546633, 546638 and others but no luck.

[RANT]I signed up for this promotion prior to a stay at the aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral in June this year.

Had issues with the joining process, so emailed SPG customer service for assistance.

I was led to believe that I had been registered for this promotion. However in the email reply from Customer Service, I received T&C's relating to an expired promotion. Emailed back pointing out this error and left it at that.

Last week logged in to the SPG app just to do some future bookings and noticed that my status was still in its original form.

Emailed Customer Service again, advising of my query and asking the process of the application.

Received a reply that it would take 4 weeks after the stay for the "upgrade" to take be activated and another 4-6 weeks for me to receive my new card.

I replied to this email, again, highlighting, the incorrect T&C's for the promotion I had applied for, also noting that the T&C's in the email from SPG was for an expired promotion FWIW the promotion was the "2 days of Happy" promotion. I also mentioned that the stay was back in June and it was now August.

This morning I get another reply informing me that the aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral is not part of this promotion. Well no sh!t sherlock, the promotion expired at the end of 2012!

I've again replied outlining the exact promotion that I was signed up for and highlighted the T&C's of this promotion which do not stipulate particular Starwood properties. The only stipulation being that it be any Starwood property in the Asia-Pacific region be that owned, managed or franchised.

This back and forth is exceptionally frustrating, and almost feel like I'm banging my head up against the wall, going around in circles.

Anyone kind enough to provide an email address other than the catch all email address I'm repyling to?

[/END RANT]

Does this work if you have an Australian Mastercard?

Have to say it kinda sucks that I qualify for Gold (this year, was Plat prior to that) the old fashioned way, ie 10 stays, 25 nights. So this is a bit of a slap in the face to those of us who actually DO the stays to get the Gold perks.

Do you think Starwood would be flagging the "real" Gold status earners from the 1 stay a year status earners when we check in? Gosh, I do hope so .

If not, then maybe I just do this credit card thing for 2015 status earning and save myself a bucket load of money !

At least you're not a "real" Accor platinum - and I'm not sure, but doubt this works with "regular" Mastercards no matter what country.

It's still there... You just need to look for it... It's allegedly one paid stay using your mastercard at any property in the Asia Pacific - Australia included as that's how I came across it...

If you really tap out searching google, let me know...

I signed up for this promotion or one very similar in early 2012, right after joining SPG, and mostly forgot about it, because I did not have a World MasterCard. However after a stay in Asia in July the same year, paid by a regular MasterCard, I was upgraded to Gold a few days after checking out. Maybe it was a one off, YMMV.

At least it was a nice incentive, as I'm now Platinum, and do 90% of my stays at SPG hotels :-)

Wow, thanks, might stay at a SPG property and pay with my regular Mastercard just to try it out then. Though Accor is still my preferred because even if their loyalty sucks and the give out status to everyone (like me), they have quite a few properties in this area, prices are reasonable and their points are somewhat useful too.
