Agree with Vuelos. Would love to know what hotel this was.

All of the photos of the hotel are stock Aloft photos. None of the actual hotel (inside or out). Odd considering it opens in less than a month.

This appears to be a newly-built hotel near the entertainment district of Cancun (Cocobongos, Forum By the Sea, Margaritaville, etc). More information can be found on this link (note - this is all in Spanish).

Note this does not appear to be property with beach access. It is connected to a major convention/events center, but is still in the hotel zone.

Below is the google translate version of the article.

Under the signature "aloft" hotel chain Starwood hotel open in June adjacent to the Cancun Center, which consists of 180 rooms and will come to boost business tourism segment in the area.
Isaac Hamui Abadi, property owner, said that the opening of the hotel on that date is a fact, as it is committed with a group of conventioneers who booked 100 rooms in the middle of that month.
"We are short of a few things, but it will have to open as you are, as we have committed some dates," said the businessman.
The property also will be held for 140 parking spaces, and although he would not disclose the amount of investment, saying only that it is a significant amount.
He said the "Aloft" will be a business class hotel and is one of the best in its class. On its website, the hotel chain in July aperturará also the building that held in Merida, Yucatan.
Cancun concentrated in the area surrounding the convention center, about three thousand rooms in European plan to advance the "all inclusive" and this property will increase the supply of this segment of tourism.
Nationally, the average cost of an international tourist is $ 430, the business equivalent to about $ 900 with stays of 4.27 days.
Moreover, Hamui Abadi said the cruise market in Mahahual recover slightly this year, expecting the arrival of 190 floating hotels compared to 2012, where he received 140.

This is a new build and, as indicated above, will be adjacent to the CUN convention center. This has been in the works at least since last fall.

The map is a bit deceiving, as it is actually at the top of the '7', near the Fiesta Americana, Plaza Caracol and Cancun Center. I was just at the Hyatt Regency and took the local bus into central Cancun. Coming back, I got off in front of the new Aloft to walk back to the Hyatt. There is a large mult-storied garage at it's base, and it looks almost complete. It is definately NOT on the ocean, but not sure if there will be a beach on the bay for this property. It is a new building, and from the club lounge at the Hyatt, you can see the roof of the Aloft, and it looks like they may have some sort of pool or bar up top.

I think this is going to be a really non-traditional CUN hotel. It's not on the ocean, it has a tiny pool (that could be in Akron) and a non-resort atmosphere. It's primarily 'reason for being' is adjacency to the convention center.

While the low cost might tempt some, staying here would be a very different experience from what most CUN properties offer. Given that CUN rooms run relatively inexpensive year-round any way, I just can't imagine staying at an aloft unless I was truly there for a business meeting that would last just a day or two.

The opening GM here is a great guy -- he came from the PV Westin just prior.

Just back from Cancun and decided to check out the Aloft for a couple of days at the beginning of our vacation. For us:

The positives:

Good location: Top of the "7", right in the middle of the action...
Good redemption: when rates are otherwise high
Staff: No issues, but they seemed stressed at times to get things done

The negatives:

No beach (as noted by others)
Mold & Mildew: like other CUN properties, but the smell was everywhere (hit us the moment we walked in) and even a crack in the wall near the window in our room leaked water when there was heavy rain.
Operations: The 2 days we were there the lobby was filled with people waiting for their rooms long after the 3 pm check-in time. (We waited until nearly 4:30 ourselves). We saw housekeeping preparing rooms until late in the evening.
Rooms: Small and little or no storage. Leave clothes in your suitcase is probably the best plan. Not a fan of the sliding glass door that is also the door to the one small closet.
No beach:

For us it was worth the points to research this, we were hoping to find a go-to 1 to 2 night stopover hotel (can't stand the mold at the Courtyard CUN either, so that's out), but in the future we'll probably just priceline a night at the Westin versus staying here again.

Anyone stay here recently? I am looking book a room with points for my family and I wanted to know if they charged an extra fee for children since it says "SPG Free Nights. Rate is valid for single or double occupancy. Additional person and bedding charges may apply."

Thanks.

The key to understanding this is knowing what the property considers to be a child. Standard Starwood family policy is that children, 17 and under, stay free in existing bedding with a paying adult. If a property has a different family policy, they must state it on their Announcements page. In this case, there is no mention of a different family policy, so you can assume that a child is anyone who is 17 and under.

That being determined, the award is then limited to two adults and children stay free. However, adding any additional bedding or a third adult may add additional charges to the award booking.

I hope that helps.
