In that case, you save your suite upgrades for another property

I really wouldn't like to be working in the Starwood contact centre right now.

I have just checked my own stay history from the Jan email against my own stay records (coincidentally I have been doing my annual accounts and thus wading through stay receipts).

Both my stay and nights total on the January email is adrift from my records. The nights quite significantly adrift. I don't normally bother checking the night tally and usually have little interest in stays beyond the 25 required for Plat, obviously I do check that I get roughly the number of points that I expect for each stay.

This does beg the question though of how accurate the historical record of nights is. Part of the anomaly is explained by a stay with checkout on the 1/1/12 but that only explains part of the gap. Sadly the missing nights do not take me over the 50 night threshold

Were any from stays in 2010 going into 2011? If not, you might want to have someone take a look.

Even if I had missed a night and fell short with 49, I wouldn't be complaining about the wonderful changes we've seen to the SPG program.
Just to clarify, you did not "earn" your suite upgrades. You were fortunate to be blindly retroactively rewarded with those suite nights. Now don't get me wrong, I am very excited about the program changes and I am happy for you that it worked out. As someone who had 49 nights last year, 100% of my total stays were with Starwood Hotels, and 100% of the money spent on those Hotels were out of my pocket (self employed consultant)...I was blindly retroactively punished.

For those of us who were just under the 50 stay threshold, we would have liked an opportunity to truly "earn" that added perk to the platinum program. Furthermore, after seeing the rumors swirling on FT for the last month, it is clear that Starwood was discussing/planning this in 2011 and they missed a great opportunity to drive more sales in the 4th QTR if they would have given everyone a sneak-peek of what is to come.

I look forward to earning my 50 nights this year...just to be told by Starwood that I needed 55 for an even better perk next year

William,

I did not think that I had qualified but I received an email informing me of my lifetime gold status and telling me that I had 10 suite night awards. Is this a system glitch?

I wasn't sure if I had 50 nights last year or not, but just got an e-mail congratulating me on being eligible for the new benefit.

"Congratulations, you've earned the suite life. Because you stayed 50 eligible nights in 2011, you've earned 10 Suite Night Awards™ to upgrade to a standard suite or premium room."

Can't wait to try this out in March.

Edit: Just saw the note above, and I don't think it was a glitch. I just recalculated and I just went over 50. As a side note, mine does not mention receiving any lifetime status although it mentions the requirements needed for lifetime status. And I did not meet the requirements so the e-mail appears to be accurate for me at least.

I cannot fathom that people are b*tching about this program addition. You should be embarrassed.

Frankly I am very surprised SPG is giving out something this rich.

Doubtful, but send me your SPG account number and I'll be glad to make some inquiries.

I think those rumors existed last Fall, and some of us acted upon them. I was at 47 stays in mid-December, and figured there might be something good coming up for people with 50 stays or more. So I directed 3 more stays to Starwood (at the opportunity cost of one HHonors free night cert). Turns out 50 stays won't matter, so my gamble didn't pay off (as I was well above 50 nights with my 47 stays). I'm not suggesting that a reasonable person with 49 nights should have stayed one more night, but it's not totally counter-intuitive to some FTers.

No they were not.

Seriously should I really need to get someone to take a look? If this sort of retrospective qualification threshold was to be put in place it should have been well prepared. Surely the very first thing on that preparation list would be the ability to give a complete download of the SPG record of a members stay record in 2011? If there are errors in 2011 there are likely to be similar errors in each and every other year of my membership are there not?

That is the least that SPG could make available IMHO. The flurry of work that this will create should have been well anticipated and catered for (perhaps it has but I don't see a download my stay history function on SPG.com for instance). I shudder to think about the process of querying stay histories on the phone with some of the more English language challenged staff in Cork for instance. Whilst I have another option many other members will not.

One of the consequences of dropping these night dependant benefits retrospectively surely is losing the natural in year checking which members would have made if they had realised that their stay or night count had any importance beyond the original Plat requirements? I have never cared about my stay/night count in any year once I have hit the 25 stay requirement, so it is now nigh on impossible for me to validate stay/night histories stretching back 10 years isn't it? SPG.com doesn't even show the stay length in question under activity history, simply the SPG points accrued.

That's a very good point and something that I should have been paying attention to. I did the opposite of you, I actually rescheduled my business meetings in December till after the New Year so that I could begin qualifying for 2012 Platinum...which clearly was a brilliant strategy!
