Depends on what you want to do with the miles. So if I spend ~$10k, I can buy 300k Starwood points and convert them over to AA miles 375,000 miles and count them towards my lifetime platinum before the 12/1 deadline.

Krazieman you need to read the OP a little more closely.

So, it's $700 to get 25,000 AA miles before the 12/1 deadline.

Not quite. $17.50 is the regular price for 500 *points; the discount price is $14. So it's $560 to buy the max of 20K to get 25,000 AA miles !

The only time you can find a better deal on points is when you sign up for a card ... and even then, perhaps not. For those that think this is a bad deal, you really must be absolutely insane. I can spend 20,000 points to fill myself up to 80,000 points and now go stay at a Category 6 hotel for four nights and get a fifth night free. Not bad for $560 when I'll be staying in a room valued about 1.5x that at minimum each night. This deal definitely suits some people more than others.

I agree this is a good deal. The question is whether I flip them to AA. The thought kills me...but, I really want lifetime Platinum.

Good point. I wouldn't say this is a bad deal, just not a great deal. I burned a lot of points and now down to 5000...The only value would be if I plan on staying at expensive ($120+) Cat 1, 2 or 3s in the next little while.

If you are within striking distance of 1MM or 2 MM on AA this is a plausible alternaltive to a MR to pick up miles. For $560 if you are extremely lucky you might be able to get two return flight to somewhere that could net you say 2,000 miles each way for a total of say 8,000 miles with PLT bonus. The 25,000 from SPG is good value relative to this and you do not have to waste time flying.

Yeah, for anyone doing mileage runs just for lifetime status, you probably first should buy your limits from aa and spg, because 2 to 3 cpm is pretyy good. If you are combining MRs with travel to places you want to go or you need BIS miles for status this year, it is different.
