For those with questions regarding the best timing for applying for a Platinum or Gold status match, this is the policy to keep in mind for your individual determination:
Elite Expiration: The Elite Status Challenge entitles members to one full year of elite status, from one renewal period to the next (i.e. the end of February one year to the end of February the next year) and only carries over if they are upgraded on or after March 1st (whereas earning status naturally* gives members elite status for the remainder of the current year, carries over for the entirety of the following year, and expires at the end of February in the third year)
Elite Status Challenge Expiration Example: If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017 they retain status until February 28th, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1st, 2017 they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28th, 2019.

However, if eligible nights are booked at a paid rate and a stay is posted to your account, then they will count towards the Platinum challenge.

Thanks for the fast reply
A bit disappointing knowing that we pay more than the BAR compared to the days before, but that for the event we have to block all 15 rooms.
I assume this is non negotiable with the hotel, as this is handled directly by SPG?

Events do not post as eligible stays, however, so none of the nights associated with an event are going to count.
Your contract is with the hotel, so you can ask them to parse it whatever way you wish. Whether they will agree to it, however, it totally up to them.

All I am saying is that if a paid-rate stay is posted to your SPG account and the nights fall within the offer as it is set up for you, then those nights will count towards the Platinum challenge.

I checked out on 9 August 2017 and the points and stay credit posted the next day 10 August 2017.
I received an email stating that I had completed my Platinum Challenge on 10 August 2017.
So it's 1 to 2 days for my case. ^

Hi -
I am currently in a Platinum Challenge. Do nights at hotel with "limited SPG benefits" count toward my night requirement?
I am specifically looking at Hong Kong Hotels ..
looking deeper at the website, it appears that it does.

If your reservation is an eligible paying rate, it will count towards your night requirements for Platinum Challenge.

Counting nights for Platinum challenge
While booking a stay in June the phone rep asked if husband might be interested in a status challenge. The resulting email says that he will receive Platinum status for staying 18 nights between "June 1, 2017 and August 31, 2017".
I'm the travel planner in the family and we are having a bit of difficulty getting a clear answer from emails to SPG Gold online center. We have asked whether the night of the 31st of August is counted and gotten a no-answer, answer (he is traveling that week). I am working now on the assumption that it is not an eligible night, just to be on the safe side.
He also sent an email confirming our count of the nights he has stayed so far and the email counted two nights that we stayed in June-1 night was an award night and the other points and cash. The email clearly counted those two nights as eligible toward plat status but it is my understanding that award nights and points/cash nights don't count toward his 18 nights, correct?
We have less than two weeks and are determined to stay for the required 18 nights so I want to make sure to get it right.

For just about every promo/challenge I've seen, only paid nights/stays count. It hasn't been that long that SPG included reward nights counting towards status.

Do read the Terms and Conditions before applying.
It is any three month period
1 Jun - 31 Aug
1 Jul - 30 Sep
1 Aug - 31 Oct
You choose your three month period by timing that the take up of the challenge.
Do plan carefully. I believe if you fail a challenge, you cannot take it again or opt for a different three month period.
I achieved my 18 nights in one (full cash) stay and received Platinum status within 2 days of check-out of that stay. It is a very efficient process.
