For those with questions regarding the best timing for applying for a Platinum or Gold status match, this is the policy to keep in mind for your individual determination:

Elite Expiration: The Elite Status Challenge entitles members to one full year of elite status, from one renewal period to the next (i.e. the end of February one year to the end of February the next year) and only carries over if they are upgraded on or after March 1st (whereas earning status naturally* gives members elite status for the remainder of the current year, carries over for the entirety of the following year, and expires at the end of February in the third year)

Elite Status Challenge Expiration Example: If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017 they retain status until February 28th, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1st, 2017 they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28th, 2019.

If one starts a challenge from 1-Jan to 31 Mar 2017, the 18th night is on 12 Mar, Platinum status is until Feb 28, 2019, correct? Does one still need to have the 25 stays or 50 nights by the end of 2017 to keep the platinum status? Does having Hyatt diamond status help?

Yes.

No, but you will need to complete 25 eligible stays or 50 eligible nights in 2018 to maintain your Platinum Status.

Hi ekze,

If you earn SPG Gold/Platinum status via Elite Challenge, your Marriott account will be upgraded to the respectful status after you link your SPG account and Marriott account.

So I have the following question:
I am SPG Gold right now and have been Platinum in the past (5 years ago). I have a lot of upcoming stays in the 1st quarter of 2017 coming up and should get at least 18 nights until March 2017. Am I eligible for the Platinum status challenge?

You should call Platinum Concierge and have them check. The system will tell them if you are or you aren't. 888-625-4991.

I sent an email to the platinum liaison and received this answer to my original question.

If you qualify in March, 2016, your account will remain at Platinum status until the end of March, 2017.

I believe the sender mistyped the year in both cases. It does appear that the answer does not correspond to the above. Which is correct? Thanks...

My apologies if you were misinformed, but there is an easy way to sort which is correct using the Terms and Conditions of membership in SPG.

In Section 8.1 - Qualifying period, it says:

"...Once an SPG Member reaches Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status, the applicable benefits will commence during that Qualifying Period and continue through February of the second calendar year following such Qualifying Period. For example, if an SPG Member meets the Gold Minimum Requirement during the 2014 Qualifying Period, the SPG Member will become a Gold Preferred Guest for the remainder of 2014, all of 2015 and January and February of 2016..."

So, let's apply this to your prospective earning date of March 2016:

If an SPG Member meets the Gold Minimum Requirement during the 2016 Qualifying Period, the SPG Member will become a Gold Preferred Guest for the remainder of 2016, all of 2017 and January and February of 2018.

This example says "Gold Preferred Guest", but it is applicable to all elite tiers.

Therefore, the correct answer would have been February 28, 2018.

I hope this helps.

Wiki Clarification

Based on this information from Starwood Lurker, can someone please update the wiki (I tried and could not).

Basically, anyone who takes the Challenge in the first qtr 2017 will have Plat status till Feb 2019. There is no requirement for the challenge to be completed AFTER Feb 28th 2017 as the wiki seems to imply.

If I call Starwood today (25 December), when should I expect the challenge to start? Also, if I call after 1 January, until when will my status be valid after I complete the 18 nights within 90 days?

Hi carpediem22,

The Challenge will start from the 1st of the month you have chosen to start the challenge. This meant that, if you choose to start in December for continuous 3 months (December, January, February), all eligible paid nights will be counted from the 1st December till End February.

If you complete your Elite Status challenge on or before 28 February 2017, your status will be good through 28 February 2018.

If you have any further questions, you may email [email protected] for assistance.

Hope this clarifies your doubt.

What is currently the best offer to get automatic Gold with just a single stay?

I've been staying with other major hotel chains over the years but am looking to get back to my old ways and start racking up the nights/stays with Starwood again, though I'd rather not start from scratch if I can help it.

Call the SPG hotline.

When I did the challenge 2 years ago, it's actually per quarter. So not by specific date.. thats all I know.
