For those with questions regarding the best timing for applying for a Platinum or Gold status match, this is the policy to keep in mind for your individual determination:

Elite Expiration: The Elite Status Challenge entitles members to one full year of elite status, from one renewal period to the next (i.e. the end of February one year to the end of February the next year) and only carries over if they are upgraded on or after March 1st (whereas earning status naturally* gives members elite status for the remainder of the current year, carries over for the entirety of the following year, and expires at the end of February in the third year)

Elite Status Challenge Expiration Example: If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017 they retain status until February 28th, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1st, 2017 they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28th, 2019.

All I've received by email reply is that if I finish the challenge by the end of April, I would only get platinum until Feb 2013. That would be for the period of February 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012.

Two questions:
1) To request and be granted a platinum challenge, do you need to be platinum or equivalent in another program, or is gold enough?
2) If granted, are you upgraded to platinum instantly for 3 months so you can enjoy the platinum benefits during the challenge?

1) I didn't have to show any status with anyone when I did a plat challenge last year.

2) No.

I got some clarification after emailing Plat concierge (again). I was told that if start the challenge after February, i.e., March 1, you will be Plat (once you complete the challenge) for the rest of 2012, 2013, and until Feb. 2014. So, I guess it makes sense to hold off on doing to challenge until after March 1. If you start before March 1, the Plat status only lasts until Feb. 2013.

Yep. This is the smartest way to do it.

I had a bunch of travel clustered around August-November last year; so that's when I did the challenge. However I would've done exactly what you propose to do if I were able.

This is the clarification that I received.

"As long as your account is upgraded to platinum after March 31, 2012 your platinum status would be valid for the rest of 2012 and all of 2013. "

So it seems like you can start in Feb lets say and do 17 nights and do the final night in april and you should be good.

Does anyone know for the platinum challenge if you have to book the rooms via spg.com or if you can go through another site like hotels.com (to get the cashback %) and just give them my spg number.

They would have to be points eligible stays, so you wouldn't be able to get credit for reservations made through 3rd party sites. You should be able to get cash back when going through MrRebates to Sheraton, Aloft, or Four Points.

There has been anecdotal evidence of folks getting stay and night credit from bookings from third party sites, but I wouldn't risk it. SPG's terms say they don't have to honor stays/nights from these sites.

Does SPG have a Gold Challenge ?

Hello Folks,

Does SPG also have a gold challenge ?
Is there any way to get this ?
Knowning my stay pattern for the coming months, I wont make the required number of nights for Platinum challenge and hence wanted to check out the Gold challenge if its there.

I usually stay at Marriots / IHG but will be going to a place where the Westin has a good property and more importantly approved by my client.

Seek advise.

Thanks
Abhi

In the case the emphatic nature of the "NO!" was because you thought this was ridiculous, I'd like to point out that Marriott Rewards does do it this way (you get provisional status at the start of the challenge, which you get to keep as long as you complete the challenge successfully). And I presume the reason for the question is that E.N. is a Marriott Rewards member (per their profile).

AFAIK, though, no other program other than Marriott does that.
