Booking multiple rooms for "yourself"
I'm in the process of booking 9 rooms in Sheraton P.R. Hotel/Casino. I was informed that the SPG rule is that you cannot earn *points on more than three rooms at a time - regardless of whether or not you pay for more than that.
Why is that? This rule seems to have no real bases in any concrete reasoning (at least not that I can make out). Sure, I understand why I only get stay/night credits for my personal rooms, but if I'm paying for friends/family and I have 9 rooms under my name... Why shouldn't I get the *points?
Any thoughts?

Personally, I feel that allowing a member to get credit for more than one room is very generous already. Certainly no airline allows something like that, and I don't know if any of the other hotel programs do either.
If you're booking a block, you can always talk with the hotel about special treatment.

Marriott and Hyatt allow credit for up to three rooms. Priority Club allows credit for up to nine rooms. And Hilton allows credit for up to two rooms.

Thanks, I'll add that to my repository of knowledge. So it sounds like 2 or 3 is pretty standard. I still think that's pretty generous, but it should cover most families.

Do you have a spouse going with you? You could put 3 rooms in his/her name and 3 in your name. Since you can share points with anyone in the same household, you can easily transfer points after they post.

I agree that anything over 2 rooms is generous since it is plausible for a family to book 2 rooms, but 3 rooms to me is generous.
FYI UA will allow redeemable miles for a 2nd seat but not elite qualifying miles.

- It encourages you to recruit some of those friends/family into the program.
- It keeps the hotel from having to spend more marketing money (the cost of more points) to a single individual who is already loyal.
- It reduces the problem of corporate managers booking a block of rooms in their name to get all the points rather than allowing their employees to develop their own brand loyalty.

I book 3 rooms. Family with 3 teenagers- many European and Asian rooms only take 3 and then one is on a put up bed. At 6 feet plus not a great option!
Radisson seem to have a flexible approach. I check in with colleages- if they are not in scheme their room points of about 5000 points (less than 1000 miles when converted) always get credited to me as they enter my card without question( rooms are charged to company so no billing issues)

Actually, airlines do allow miles for multiple seats booked in your name. Well, at least DL does.

Yes, but she doesn't have the SPG AMEX. Aren't they hesitant (or not allowed) to credit her with the stays/nights/points if she isn't the one paying? EVEN IF she is staying with her SO who is?

anyone can pay and use any credit card but the reservation in her name with her own SPG number will go into her account.
