Baggage Allowance on mixed class redemption
 
Please can one of our resident experts advise the baggage allowance we should expect for a mixed (Econ/Bus) class DC redemption at the business class rate?:

My expectation is eg SQ 30kg all the way (the longer legs and fare paid taking precedent), but I have no paperwork or info referring to baggage. BMI website provides no clues on the booking, and checkmytrip.com indicates 20kg on the economy legs, 30kg on the business legs.

More or less all ICC issued redemption tickets seem to indicate a 20kg limit - and often for the business segments too :eek: however, the enforceable limit, as per IATA rules, is the highest limit that forms part of your itinerary - so, it's 30kg for all segments.

*G also gets an additional 20kgs/extra piece. Not sure about your BD*S.

BD*S get an extra 20Kg on BD metal only.

Flyertalk.com inserts adverts all over the place - no need to worry.

If you hang around long enough, you may wish to subscribe to FT Premium, which allows you to brows ad-free for $12 a year. Almost all regulars go for this option.

The higher allowance applies provided you do not break your journey for more than 24 hours. The extra allowance for *G applies for all flights.

Let me add my experience which is quite different. I had a number of awards in mixed classes and every time we were only allowed the weight limit of the first sector no matter whether all your other sectors were in a higher booking class. This has always worked to our disadvantage and I had many phone calls with BMI and the airline (in our case NZ). We were never allowed to take any more bags with us than our first flight allowed us.

The problem was that the first flight was in Y and then we had a C and later even a flight in F. However, we were only allowed 20kg per person plus the *G extra 20kg.

So, if there is a rule somewhere I'd like to know about this because I'm going to run into the same problem again soon.

If a passenger is travelling on a bmi shorthaul interline fare and then onto a different carrier on the same ticket, bmi will honour the luggage allowance of the onward carrier.

This is the BD stance, YMMV with other carriers.

Firstly, this could be a BD exception which is not honoured by other *A partners. But the other reason could be some some feeder flights on BD only have Y class and you connect to a C class longhaul flight. In this case it would make sense to allow more luggage.

In our case there was not C award space on the first sector (but the flight sold C class seats). But I don't think this was their reason for denying the addl luggage. It was simply that our first sector was in Y and that's when you check-in your bags. They even told me that I could check-in extra luggage after the first sector which, of course, wasn't much use for us.

Having done a little research on this, it appears that UK carriers will honour the luggage allowance of onward carriers, provided the journey is on one ticket. Outside Europe, it seems more like what you report, the carrier you check in with determines luggage allowance.

Since you specifically mention Air New Zealand, they appear to have a halfway house, where they will honour a bigger baggage allowance (more specifically a piece concept rather than weight concept) on a later flight in the itinerary, however only if that later flight is also an ANZ service.

Just found this thread on a search, but am still puzzled as to what I can expect later this week on my mixed class itin:

leg 1 - AC Y, YYZ-EWR
leg 2 - TP J, EWR-OPO-MRS

I'm presuming I can interline my bags anyway as it's all on one ticket, but CMT is spectacularly unenlightening when it comes to breaking down my baggage allowance... :confused:

Is this something PTS could help with..?

If your itinerary includes a connection to/from a flight not operated by Air Canada, the baggage policy of the carrier operating the first flight in your itinerary applies for all flights until you reach your destination. For example:

However, looking at that same page (at least for CA/US -> Europe flights), it does state that Star Gold gets 3 bags in economy, and Star Silver gets 2 bags. So if you're *G and flying in business with a first flight in Economy, it should make no difference. If you're not, then of course it could be an issue.

My experience with ANA was definitely different. Flew LHR-FRA-NRT-FUK with the first two sectors in J on LH and the third sector in NH domestic Y. They were adamant in all correspondence beforehand that I would only get the 20kg in the domestic sector + 20kg *G allowance
