Star Carriers that Won't Assign Seats Even in Premium Classes (Award Travel)

SK wouldn't do it for me in C on intra-Europe legs. The agent tried, and the computer denied. Only a window or aisle preference could be requested. Just 6 weeks ago, SK assigned specific seats, but something's changed.

Has anyone encountered this problem on other Star carriers, or on SK transatlantic? Specifics please.

This is normal for Intra-Europe flights on most carriers.
Some carriers (LH I believe) won't allocate a seat far in advance, but will do so for you in the weeks before travel...

Its kinda difficult to assign seats if you don't know until the day before whether there will be 2, 4, 10 or 16 rows of premium class seats on the plane...

Intra-Europe Y and C are the same seats either blocked middles or collapsed middles (to make the remaining aisle and window seats wider). Due to this flexibility they can sell a lot of C if they need to. Hence they won't know the C class rows. You can either request a seat type (aisle / window) and then use online checkin to confirm a specific seat.

This seems a better topic for the Star Alliance Forum; I'll move this there.

I must be missing something.

When I fly LH C class intra-Europe, I can get seat allocation at the time of booking.

So what gives?

(Have to admit you can't do this on TK, but they are not really Euopean).

Ah yes!... If C is somewhat empty and they know that a set number of rows are going to me the minimum C cabin then you *CAN* book your seats (I have this as an example from GVA-FRA in Jan) However if the C cabin minimum rows seats are booked (like I have for a FRA-ZRH flight in Jan) you can put a request in as they reallocate the rows you will be assigned a seat (or do it on your own with the online check in). As one of the posters above mentioned LH C is a flexible cabin so no use booking a seat in a further back row that may be contracted before seatmap being open due to lower C demand.

I found similar situation with both NH and SQ.
