RTW Ticket Charge
 

Hello,

I purchased two separate RTW tickets issued by United in Sydney Australia.

I will departing on the first 10 days after purchase and the second in 3 months.

In both instances my credit card was only charged 79.6% of the quoted fare price. I contacted United and they lady informed me I had paid the full amount.

Also on the receipt it states I was charged the full amount for both fares.

Will they charge the remainder when I check in for the first flight? As I could not find in the ticket conditions that two separate charges would be placed.

Welcome to FT and the *A forum, bethanyB! You normally have to pay the full amount when the ticket is issued. So what were you quoted and what was deducted from your CC?

Could it be a currency issue?

I.e. ticket in AUD, your credit card in USD, for example?

It should not be a currency issue since the AUD and USD are trading at about even.

My best guess is that the agent who did the transaction took the amount from the wrong line, in other words, charged the total fare but did not have the taxes/fees/surcharges included.

How this would resolve itself, I am not sure, but since UA said the record shows paid in full, I would say that you just got a ~20% discount off the fares.

Once you have ticketed the ticket, you are essentially locked into the fare. So UA cannot charge extra afterwards. However should you reissue your ticket afterwards, the missing amount may show up and you'll be charged then.

It appears that what under 'Card Authorisation' for United was not the final amount when the transaction was process by the bank. (Approx 5 days)

The bank could not explain this why the amount increased. So the fares in the end were charged at the quoted amount.

Some merchants have an upper limit on the amount that can be processed as one transaction and so split it into multiple. I am surprised that United has a cap low enough to bite on a RTW though.
