Kick out United?

If the *A were to try and kick out United how would they have to do it, and is this even a feasible idea?

The bigger question is why. To leave * without a US carrier? I'd say UA is much better than several of the recent *A additions, so I don't think that's the direction in which we're heading. (thinks about AI, shudders)

Exactly, that would be a dumb move. Also, I believe since UA is a founding member of the Star Alliance they can't be kicked out, but I might be wrong.

Who are you suggesting replace them after they are kicked out?

If you want to kick out an airline, why UA and not US?

I would agree; it is far easier to find partner award availability on US than on UA, though.

Varig was not a founding member of Star Alliance; they happened to join later in 1997, the year in which *A was founded. (Source: Wikipedia)

Correct, subtle but important distinction.

I could see *A doing something if UA were to do what Varig did and fold and then somebody like an Express carrier (heh, Mesa) or something bought the name off the scrap heap and started operating as United. I wouldn't think *A would have any obligations in that case, and that's my understanding of what happened with Varig.

In the long run, if UA and US merge, then you do not need to even think about kicking UA out.

I think this thread has run it's course. There is a long thread in UA on the possible merger and conversations would be better directed there.
