Quick question regarding *A check in

I have a ticket purchased on NZ from LAX-AKL next Feb. I'm wondering if I now purchase a ticket on UA or US from PHX-LAX if I'll be able to check in all the way through for my NZ flight while I'm in PHX or if I'll have to wait until I get to LAX.

Previously this worked because I had a UA flight from PHX-LAX and my LAX-AKL flight was a UA codeshare flight on NZ. But my flight will be purchased separately this time so I'm wondering if the same benefits will apply.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to flyer talk neeyon :)

Since they are on separate tickets you will not be able to check in for the NZ flight until LAX. You can however, check bags through (show the onward ticket when you check in at PHX).

The bags should be fine to be tagged all the way to AKL, but yes the NZ boarding pass would have to be obtained at LAX.

But I have had instances where UA simply ignored the interline baggage agreements between them and the other carrier such as CX. Last year flying BUR-SFO-HKG with the former sector on UA and the latter on CX, UA simply refused to tag my bags all the way to HKG. Upon arrival at SFO, I had to retrieve them, drag them to the Int'l term and recheck them in again with CX. I simply hope that with the full *A the full journey, this will not be the case with the OP.
