RE: FF Refused

My senior friends will be flying in Sept from SFO to VCE via FRA. They have enough UA FF mileage to bump up to BC. She called UA to make arrangements to fly LH to FRA (for the bed seats in Business), and UA stated that LH will not accept the UA FF mileage! I was under the impression that LH was part of the Star Alliance, and that there was cooperative mileage exchange between members of all the Airline Alliances. Can someone please enlighten me, as I do not my friends to have to basically "sit up" for the long flight. Thank you.

There is no "cooperative mileage exchange" within *A, however UA and LH do have a special agreement to allow UA FFP members to upgrade on LH flights.

Your friend would need to request a paper LH paper upgrade voucher from UA MP, and then present that voucher at check-in. You can do a search on the LH board (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=497074) for more info...

Tickets.. no problem.

UPGRADES.. well, using miles to upgrades across *A was introduced just last year ( visit their website, news ). UA is not integrated into that yet, last I looked. And I've been monitoring.

If you go to the awards page.. you'll notice there's upgrades for UA metal... but if you go to the *A or partner charts... there's no upgrades/miles shown?

In fact, I think only 4 of the members are supporting *A upgrade awards... Lufthansa is one of them.. but not UA.

If your ticket is booked as a LH flight number on LH metal in H class or above, you can use MP miles to reserve an upgrade. Call MP and check if it is available. As stated, you will need a paper cert.

You can also use a printed SWU from most fares, but those are all standby and can't be reserved in advance.

Plans for *A upgrades using MP miles.

I just hope they end up cheaper than M&M's *A upgrades. They're charging almost as much as a Business Class award ticket - 100,000 miles to upgrade a round trip North America-Europe.

A C award is 90,000 miles on M&M, so the upgrade (100,000 miles) is actually more expensive, not almost as expensive.

Of course, you'll also get miles for your paid ticket, but then again, you'll have to pay for the ticket, too.

Oh, I forgot, the ticket is paid by the employer, and that's exactly why many pax don't care and upgrade with miles no matter what. :)
