Iceland on Star Alliance?

Hi Everyone,

Do you know if it's possible to get to Iceland on the Star Alliance network? I'm considering taking a trip there this summer, but I'd hate to miss out on all the miles getting to and from that country out of Los Angeles. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan

Very limited options - Icelandair has a near monopoly.

IIRC Austrian and possibly SAS also has a summer flight to Reykjavik, both from their main european hub. Seems a long way to go to get some miles.

You can use the staralliance.com website to see all possible routings on *A carriers.. but if you really want some kind of mileage, then book LAX-JFK/BWI and then Icelandair from JFK/BWI to KEF.. it's just more practical that way. Going all the way to Europe and then backtrack to KEF is ridiculous.

You could do a *A Award to ARN or CPH and then fly Icelandair's cheapie intra-europe service to KEF. it's not cheap like easyjet, but it's better than nothing.

This is an interesting exercise...

The OP just said 'this summer'; he didn't say exactly when or for how long. Let's just arbitrarily say 20 June to 20 July. Using those dates,

(a) he could go LAX-JFK-LAX on UA for $367 + tax. He could then go JFK-KEF-JFK on FI for $982+. Total cost: $1349+ Total *A mileage: 5,000

(b) he could go LAX-LHR-LAX on UA for $1073+. He could then go LHR-KEF-LHR on FI for GBP 123 (= $218) +. Total cost: $1291+ Total *A mileage: 11,000

Which is 'more practical' for his purposes? Which is 'ridiculous'?

Of course, using different dates will give you different numbers, UA might not be the best *A option to London, etc., etc. That's why I said it was an interesting exercise. :)

cheers,

Henry

I hear what you are saying, but "practical" and "ridiculous" have no relevance in a forum such as this where chasing the ever elusive bargains for Q miles and status is number 1 reason, number 1 reason and number 1 reason for anything! :) I have seen (and done) some truly absurd things over the years all in the name of miles and status.
Sydney to London for a weekend is fair game. :)

FYI - fares from LGW to KEF on BA are pricing out cheaper than FI's for some reason.

Starting on the 26th of March SK will fly to KEF three times a week(1,3,5) from OSL.
