Special *A Livery?
 

I was at LAX waiting for my flight on AA in Terminal 4, and I noticed that an AC was parked at the Bradley Int'l terminal with Star Alliance livery, complete with the Star logo on the tail. I couldn't see any marks identifying the airline it belonged to... anyone else seen this, or is the heat just getting to me?

As far as I know, a number of Star partners have (at least) one of their aircraft painted in the livery. Air New Zealand has an A320, with Air New Zealand written on it toward the front at the bottom.. Lufthansa, a CRJ-700, 744 and an A340, same location as ANZ. Singapore has a 777 and a 744 partially painted. Air Canada has a 767 and A340. And others probably have them too, they're just the ones I know. But at the front of the plane underneath the windows, the name of the airline is written.

All the *A airlines are supposed to have a % of their a/c in *A livery (2% IIRC), although obviously this takes some time.

Keen observers can tell from which airline logos are painted on the fuselage roughly when the a/c was done (as *A has gained and lost members over the years).

I remember the first time I saw one of these at Heathrow (fall 2000, IIRC). It blew my mind cause I couldn't figure out what airline it was, either.
Since then I've seen UA's 767 and 744, one of US's RJs, BMI, SK, LH, and I believe JK.
The livery isn't that attractive, but I think it's a great visible marketing technique, as opposed to the little logos of SkyTeam/oneworld

I think it's a requirement of being part of the alliance. As mentioned before, it's just a handful of planes - I think US has a 319, a 757, and an E70 done up. The logo of the carrier is always in very small type somewhere - towards the front for US - http://www.airliners.net/open.file/862697/M/

The agreeement is that each *A airline has to have one aircraft of each type they fly in the *A livery. Check airliners.net for all the *A livery planes.

I think it was an excellent marketing decision not to have the purple blob that is the oneworld logo on the tail of any plane :D

As was said before, with the current livery the name of the airline is written in smaller letters under "Star Alliance" toward the front of the plane. But I remember seeing the previous liveries. There were the "dancing logos" of each airline in *A that "danced" along the top of the fuselage, the one closest to the cockpit was that of the aircraft. Similarly with the "banded" livery with each airline represented with its paint job on a portion (band) of the aircraft the band closest to the front was that of the aircraft. The "dancing logos" really through me off the first time I saw them. It was an All Nippon a/c at IAD. Had it not been for the little Japanese flag at the front of the aircraft I never would have figured it out.

It was definitely not SQ, as they (oh, so special :rolleyes: ) get their own logo on the tail.
