UK upgrade certificates

Has anyone managed to use a UK upgrade certificate to upgrade from a booking class that isn't allowed in the small print? I was wondering if they always follow the letter of the law or are they ever flexible on this.

I'm a BD gold and I'm travelling on TG in business but my ticket is in I class not C or D. Is it worth saving a couple of certificates for my trip LHR - BKK in January just in case or should I go ahead and use them now on a short European hop?

Thanks for your help.

I is award booking in C class on TG and I very much doubt that they will let you use an upgrade cert on an award booking.

Isn't I class reward Biz?

Unless they are very, very heavily overbooked, airlines very rarely upgrade reward tickets. Of course, it has been known to happen from time to time, but normally a non-status paid passenger will probably get the upgrade before a status passenger with a reward ticket.

In any case, you might be better off asking at checkin to upgrade using cash, because to my knowledge you are able to pay USD650 for a one-class upgrade from any fare class, including rewards.

I wouldn't count on the Star upgrades, though it might be saving them just on the very off chance they are desperate for a reason to upgrade you during an overbooking situation. But good luck anyhow :)

I used my *A upgrade certs to upgrade myself and partner on a heavily ovebooked SAS Flight from SEA to LHR. We were both flying on either a Q or H Class economy ticket.

They were only to pleased to take the certs rather then upgrade economy passengers without anything.

So it would seem they are willing to be flexible but how far they will bend I don't know!

Happy flying

H fares are upgradable using the *A certificates. Q fares aren't. So if you were flying in H class they followed the rules. :)

You got me thinking, so I went back and checked my old booking and it was definately Q so it does seem that there is a certain flexibility in the system.

UK cert from Q

Hi

I too managed to use one from Q, on a very busy flight from SFO to LHR. Think I was lucky.

Next TransAtlantic is in V, that would be very lucky!

Richard

PS go my new MP card yesterday, only 4 months after getting the *A letter!
