Being a Canadian, I would recommend AC/Aeroplan. But for any status, you need minimal miles and money spent on AC metal - although I believe the requirements are less for non-Canadian residents than Canadian residents.

Even if you plan never to go to Canada except for transit on the way to USA - you have 3 flights to choose from - YVR to one of Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane.

The issue of domestic US flights- any non UA Star Alliance Gold status will get us into a domestic UA Club lounge, even for pure domestic US flights.

AQD requirements are halved for non-Canadian addresses, but Canada is not in a convenient location to get anywhere from Australia, so there's no point crediting to AC unless OP already makes regular trips to Canada.

Since you fly to the US at least once a year, I would go with UA. Based on your travel patterns, it looks like you should easily hit 50k *A BIS per year. Lack of lounge access doesn't really matter if you don't travel domestic US itineraries often.

There is no requirement to fly on the airline of your ffp. That's what alliances are all about. But flying the airline of your ffp can be better (increased earning, irrops, upgrades, xxxx)

Depending on destinations, Canada can just as conveinant as USA airports. And avoiding USA transits is a very big plus. No visa (or visa waiver) or silly time consuming landside transits with baggage

AC fly's YVR – SYD BNE MEL
UA flys LAX SFO IAH – SYD, LAX-MEL and SFO - MEL from 20 Oct 2019.

Both AC and UA have own-metal requirements (implied in AC's case... although I suppose it would technically be possible to book solely codeshares on AC ticket stock and not ever fly AC) that need to be considered, especially if one is based in Australia. OP at least travels regularly to the US, which should make collecting 4 UA segments a year relatively straightforward, vs meeting spend requirements on AC ticket stock.

AC spending and mileage requirements easy to get, esp for foreigners, if one goes SYD BNE MEL - YVR on AC and then either on AC metal or AC codeshare on UA connecting to a desired US destination from YVR.

I would argue that the quality of AC business class is superior to UA business (first) class - and esp if your US destination is not a UA hub - you probably do not lose anything in terms of increase flight segments if flying via YVR to a non UA US destination than if flying on UA to that final US destination.

FWIW - OZ allows one way awards with up to 6 segments by zone. Booking is painless online. I just booked a Maldives-SIN-BKK-PVG business class ticket online. The redemption rates are not unreasonable and they are generous in Zoning.

South Pacific zone includes all of Air New Zealand's Pacific routes ( except HNL) from Australia. A great deal

You're not going to get appreciably more benefits on a regular basis with Diamond+ compared to regular Diamond as you're not flying OZ a lot. Personally, I would credit miles to VA to maintain status with Virgin.

Also keep in mind OZ is 40k every two years to qualify but 30k every two years to maintain and includes credit card earnings which doesn't help because they don't have a branded card in Australia.

On a tangent, what length stopovers could you get with that (i.e. under or over 24 hours) while qualifying for the standard price?
