ROME-LAX: Swiss, Luthansa or Air Canada

Hi All -

Currently in Rome and trying to get home to LAX. Using miles for a LAST MINUTE departure (Friday!) and luckily i have a few options, but none in biz class. So this trip will be economy. Have not flown any of these airlines so wondering who offers the best / most comfortable seats/service for the long journey.

I do like that all options include going through customs in LAX, so I do not have to worry about immigration and customs during the short connections.

Options: All economy class:
------------------------------

Option 1:
LH 1841 | Airbus A320-200
1h 45m connection
LH 452 | Airbus A340-600
Total Travel Time = 15:30
---------------------------------

Option 2:
LX 1727 | Airbus A320
1h 50m connection
LX 40 | Boeing 777-300ER
Total Travel Time = 15:40
---------------------------------

Option 3:
AC 893 | Airbus A330-300
2h connection
AC 783 | Airbus A320
Total Travel Time = 16:49

Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

You are in Y, so there is no significant difference (at least between LH and LX; I have no first hand experience with AC in Y). Some would try to avoid LX B773 flights which have 10 seats abreast in Y but the aircraft will be brand new. I like the IFE on the B773 and in general I prefer LX over LH. A transfer at ZRH is as less complicated than at MUC, so no significant difference there.

No first hand experience with AC in Y, but to transfer and clear US immigration at YUL is quite easy and quick. And no need to clear immigration at LAX afterwards. However, I wouldn't be in favour of taking a (a rather long) shorthaul flight after the TATL longhaul flight - I prefer it the other way around.

Just a take a decision - which carrier you choose is not going to make a significant impact on your travel experience (at stated above you are in Y so you need to get it over with as quickly as possible)

I would say LH > LX > AC. But really whatever works best for your schedule.

AC in economy

With AC, you will clear US Immigration and customs at your transfer point ( YUL/YYZ/YVR),
so the one hour extra transit time will be saved on arrival in LAX.

I do NOT like the LX 777-300 which is 10 across in economy. I would definitely go with the airbi (8 across) and my preference would be LH unless you like breaking up your journey midway via YUL.

Avoid LX. 10 across on the 777.
