If this is true and I am starting in the USA and wanted to get to JNB...then is it legal
to go via Varig and South America instead of via LH and Europe?

RG services GRU-JNB from April 2004 onwards.

You can cross the atlantic on this flight and you have two options to continue your journey on a RWSTAR ticket: Either to FRA/MUC on LH (three service classes) or to SIN on SQ (two service classes).

Will the RG flight GRU-JNB be three service classes, and are RG First and Business comparable to LH...

RG 8790/1 (GIG-)GRU-JNB vv offers three service classes on a M11.

Looking at []bguava[/b]’s excellent trip report, RG’s strength in First Class is catering, for someone who don't really care about food, RG would not be the best choice.
