*A RTW and urface segments

I've settled on a possible RTW commencing in late september/early october. The route is CPH-SEA-SFO-NRT-SIN-BNE-SIN-PEK-CPH and fits nicely within a 29k miles ticket in D class.

The rule says I only need to date the segments up to and including the first international sector and I canthen leave the rest as open segments. I'm considering driving SEA-SFO and enjoy som scenary, but given its pretty late in the year byt the time I'm getting over there I won't know untill I get there how the weather is going to be. If I have an open sextor like that, can I decide to make it a surface sector when I get there or do I have to make the choice before issuing the ticket?

In late Sept / Oct you should not have any problems driving SFO-SEA. Maybe a bit of rain as you head up the coast but it is not like you will see snow or anything. Typically it should still be in the 20's (low 70's for the F folks), during the day.

Do the drive, it is amazing.

I agree that it's a great drive. Temperatures at that time are likely to be 15-23C (50-73F). If you only stop as needed, it's a long one day drive. If you like to stop along the way, you'll need two days.

I guess he is asking if one can "no-show" on a segment without incurring a change fee.

As long as you cancel the SEA-SFO before travel, then it shouldn't be an issue at all. Providing you keep your "routing" intact and leave from SFO, the carrier on that leg will pull the SEA-SFO coupon as well, as you have "travelled" that segment. The only thing you need to ensure if you do cancel the SEA-SFO is to make them fully aware it is only the *one* segment you are cancelling, not the rest of the itinerary.

Thanks to everyone for replying. Now I have an idea both weather-wise and rule-wise what the *A thinks of this. I know the drive is suppsoed to be sepctacular, and a few drops of rain won't scare me, the Norwegian west coast makes Seattle look like a dry spot http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
